Stolzenhain village church

The Protestant village church Stolzenhain is a listed church building in Stolzenhain , a district of the small town Schönewalde in the southern Brandenburg district of Elbe-Elster .

In the field stone church , first mentioned in the 13th century, there is a valuable late Gothic painting by the Westphalian painter Derick Baegert, which is one of the most important works of the 15th century in Westphalian painting. Immediately adjacent to the church to the south is the former parish homestead with a historic half-timbered stable .

Today the church belongs to the Evangelical Parish Schönewalde in the parish of Bad Liebenwerda of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany .

Building description and history

The field stone hall building with a short nave dates from around 1300. The nave with a gable roof has a narrower long rectangular choir , which is also provided with a gable roof. There are two pointed arch portals on the south side of the church and a sacristy annex on the north side .

The western tower with a half-timbered tower and octagonal bell storey was erected in 1753 and 1754. Here is a bronze bell created by Andreas Bacher in 1556 .

The building is located in the middle of a former cemetery.

Equipment (selection)

The church has a Dutch- influenced winged altar . It was created by the Westphalian painter Derick Baegert in the last quarter of the 15th century. In the middle picture of the reredos the picture Saint Luke paints the Madonna can be seen, of which there is another version as panel painting in the Westphalian State Museum in Münster . On the left picture you can see John writing , on the right St. Joseph as a carpenter . Today it is one of the most important works of the 15th century in Westphalian painting. The church's pulpit, decorated with flat carvings in the parapet , dates from 1541.

The organ dates from 1876 and was created by the Merseburg organ builder Friedrich Gerhardt . It has a mechanical drawer , a manual and 9 registers .

Tombs

  • Baroque tombstone from 1756 with puto and chalice (location: south choir wall, outside)
  • Baroque laurel-framed double tombstone from the second half of the 18th century with lowered horns of plenty on a sarcophagus-like base (location: southern choir wall, outside)

Rectory

Stables of the parish homestead

The two-story parsonage, which is adjacent to the church, has a parish homestead with a half-timbered stable, which is now also a listed building. Both buildings were built in the middle of the 19th century. The barn is currently the only half-timbered building of its type in the region. Inside there are various barn areas, clay floors and a wooden beam ceiling .
