After fleeing Masuria in 1945, Galuhn grew up with older siblings in Bernau near Berlin , where she decided to learn Arabic as a schoolgirl, inspired by visits to the library. She studied Arabic and Romance studies at the Humboldt University in Berlin until 1965 , a. a. with Rita Schober .
She worked as an editor for the Arabic-language program of Radio Berlin International as well as for the Weimar contributions . She married the physicist John Erpenbeck and had a daughter in 1967. Since 1976 she has been working as a research assistant at the Institute for Romance Studies at Humboldt University. 1984 followed in Berlin the habilitation on Algerian literature. During the GDR era, she began working as a translator for the Swiss Union publishing house . When, in the course of an evaluation in 1995, no faculty for Arabic studies was established at the Humboldt University , she was dismissed there and worked as a freelance translator in the following years .
Kilias translated works by Nagib Mahfuz , Mohamed Choukri , Gamal al-Ghitani , Miral Al-Tahawi , Rajaa Alsanea , Baha Taher , Ibrahim Aslan , Emily Nasrallah and other Arabic-speaking authors into German.
In 1999 she was awarded the Jane Scatcherd Prize of the Heinrich Maria Ledig-Rowohlt Foundation “for her precise translations of the novels of the Egyptian Nobel Prize winner Nagib Mahfuz, which allow insight into a different culture ”.
