Doug Moench

Douglas 'Doug' Moench (born February 23, 1948 in Chicago , Illinois) is an American writer (screenplays, comics , novels ) and journalist .

Work as a journalist

As a journalist, Moench has written for magazines such as Adam , Knight , Fling and Man to Man , and above all for the Chicago Sun-Times newspaper . He was mainly active as a reviewer and interviewer for films and musical works. In this role he interviewed bands such as The Who , The Monkees and The Seeds . At the end of the 1970s, Moench ended his career in Chicago and went to New York as a freelance writer and later to Pennsylvania.

Work as an author

Moench's artistic work includes novels, short stories, teleplays and scripts. So he wrote the scripts for the television series Mighty Mouse in the early 1980s, for which he was recognized by Wall Street Magazine and Time Magazine , and the novel adaptation of the film "Planet of the Apes" (Planet of the Apes: The Official Adaption, ISBN 978-0944735732 ).

Moench's best-known work, however, is his work as an author of comic stories about the superhero character Batman : From 1983 to 1986 and from 1992 to 1998 he was the regular author of the monthly comic series Batman (and from 1983 to 1986 he was also the regular author of the second Main Batman series Detective Comics ) the abbot adventure over the well-known criminal hunter disguised as a fearsome bat creature. The anniversary edition # 500 of the Batman series (1993) written by Moench is one of the best-selling comic books ever with more than 7 million copies sold (without reprints in translations and in anthologies with other issues) and made Moench, who received a considerable royalty for this edition becoming one of the wealthiest writers in the United States.

Other well-known comic series that Moench temporarily supervised were Catwoman , Conan , Fantastic Four , James Bond , Hulk , Moon Knight , Thor, Vampirella , Mister Miracle and Ghost Rider .

Frequent artistic collaborators of Moench in the past were the draftsmen Jim Aparo , Kelley Jones and Paul Gulacy , as well as the ink pen John Beatty . With each of the above, he worked in particular on countless Batman stories.

The fictional character invented by Moench includes the superhero Moon Knight for Marvel Comics , as well as numerous permanent characters from the Batman universe, such as the grubby police officer Harvey Bullock, the gang leader Black Mask and the drug addict terrorist Bane .

Today Moench lives in Pennsylvania with his wife Debra and his dog Rusty.

Moench has received various awards for his work as a comic book author. He received the Eagle, the World Fantasy Award , the Diamond Gemstone, the Inkpot, the Eisner. In 1978 he received the British Fantasy Award for Weirdworld: Marvel Premiere # 38 .

As a journalist he received the Chicago Newspaper Guild Award in 1972. As a screenwriter, the series "The New Adventures of Mighty Mouse", which he wrote, was nominated by Times as one of the ten best TV series in 1987, while the Wall Street Journal nominated the series as the best of Year.
