Doctor Snuggles is a British - Dutch animated series from 1979. The series is about the unusual inventor Doctor Snuggles.

Doctor Snuggles, the main character in the series, is an optimistic inventor and do-gooder who always finds a solution. Snuggles lives in a typical English cottage in the country. In the bizarre world of Doctor Snuggles almost all objects and animals are animated and animated, such as the barn, the badger Dennis, the mouse nibbler, the fearful river or the robot Mathilde Dosenfänger. All have strong personalities and endearing human characteristics. Doctor Snuggles and his mostly animal friends drive Miss Reinlich, the good soul of Doctor Snuggles' estate, often downright insane.

Dr. Snuggles

He is the main character in the series. His distinctive symbols are his little umbrella (English name: Jefferson), which he also uses as a jumping stick, and his pocket watch ticker and his very hard-wearing fly. He is always friendly, optimistic and helpful. In the English version, Sir Peter Ustinov lends him his voice.

Dennis the badger

Dennis (English name: Dennis the Badger) is a rather cozy, talking badger in blue dungarees. Not least because of his talent in technical things, he often has ideas that continue the story. He often makes fun of annoying nibblers.

Nibble the mouse

Knabber (English name: Knobby the Mouse) is the name of a lazy mouse in a ringed, sleeveless shirt, who was in the kitchen of Dr. Snuggles lives and loves cheese. She often drives Miss Reinlich crazy and often gets everyone involved in trouble.

Miss Hilde Reinlich

The elderly housekeeper (English name: Miss Nettles) of Dr. Snuggles is always very suspicious of his inventions and tends to quit.

Mathilde can catcher

Mathilde Dosenfänger (English name: Mathilda Junkbottom) is in the first episode of Dr. Snuggles invented to help Miss Reinlich. Made mostly of cans and other junk, she is one of the few characters in the series that cannot speak.

Grandma cuddle

Grandma Kuschel (English name: Granny Toots) is an elderly lady and good friend of Dr. Snuggles. She has a big heart for cats, so she started a cat hospital next to her house. The cosmocat also lives with her.

Cosmocat

The Cosmic Cat (English name: Cosmic Cat), as its name suggests, comes from space. When Dr. Snuggles gets stuck in difficult situations, he asks her for advice.

Wilhelma wine vinegar

Wilhelma Weinessig (English name: Winnie Vinegar Bottle) is a cozy witch who has grown her little house in a large wine vinegar bottle that is located in the huge salt-and-pepper mountains. Wilhelma is a good friend of the doctor, who helps him with her magical powers from time to time - but only as long as she is not in a bad mood.

Willi the fox

Willi (English name: Willie the Fox) is an upright running fox with a black tie and bowler hat , who, together with Karlchen Rattenkopf, does not stop Dr. Playing pranks on Snuggles, or trying to rob him. Willi likes to give orders and calls his partner a stupid rat .

Little Karl Rat Head

Karlchen Rattenkopf (English name: Charlie Rat) is a small, upright rat in a black jacket and with a long nose. He is Willi the fox's loyal but stupid partner and willingly calls him boss . His loyalty to Willi, however, is pushed to its limits from time to time by his brutal habitus.

Professor Emerald

The professor (English name: Professor Emerald) is an evil wizard who lives in his domicile, the Seetang Castle , in the Green Sea. Using his magical powers, with which he can teleport, transform into a vulture or fly on a carpet, he counteracts the good intentions of the doctor with evil and stubborn actions.

Production and publication

The characters and world of Doctor Snuggles were developed by Jeffrey O'Kelly in 1978 . The rights to the figures are now back with O'Kelly. The individual episodes of the television series were written by well-known authors, mainly Richard Carpenter , who also wrote Catweazle , and Paul Halas. Other authors were Douglas Adams , made famous by The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy , and his radio producer John Lloyd . The episodes 7 The Water Thieves from Space and 12 The Journey to Nowhere are from them . Episode 9 The Sunny Laughing Machine was written by Loek Kessels.

Doctor Snuggles was a co-production between English and Dutch producers. The animation work was shared by two studios. Episodes 1-6, 8 and the intro and outro were produced at Topcraft in Japan with Tsuguyuki Kubo as animation supervisor , episodes 7 and 9-13 by DePatie-Freleng (later bought by Marvel Comics ) in the United States.

The series aired in the UK from October 1, 1979 to 1980 by ITV . From June 24, 1981 to September 22, 1981, the first program (ARD) was broadcast in the FRG. In 2008 the series appeared on three DVDs under the title Doctor Snuggles. Collector's Box at Universal.

In 1981, Polydor (Universal Music) released the soundtrack (2432 230), which contained the melodies of the series in German. The title song was sung by Siw Inger .

Comic series

In 1981 the Condor Verlag published a comic series for the television series. Ten issues of this have been published. For the individual issues, the stories from the TV episodes have been published as several smaller comic stories. So z. B. from the episode The Water Thieves from Outer Space, the first part in which Dr. Snuggles discovers the cause of the river bed drying up and persuades the river to flow back into the sea from its source in the cave, a separate story. In addition, two-part sequel stories were created, divided into two issues.

The German processing was done by Bavaria Atelier GmbH . The dialogues were written by Eberhard Storeck , while Günther Sauer directed the dubbing .

In addition to Peter Ustinov, Olwen Griffiths, John Challis and Jeffrey O'Kelly themselves spoke a few vocal roles in the English version. The series was also dubbed in Swiss German , Spanish and Swedish .

Planning a new series

In 2002, a preview of a new, previously unreleased Doctor Snuggles series appeared. Jeffrey O'Kelly was responsible for this.
