Cover

The cover was designed by Aaron Hayward and David Homer. In 2007 it won the ARIA Award for best album cover. In the background you can see a road that leads into the horizon of the Australian hinterland , while in the middle you can see a window where a hotel room from the 1930s is shown and a headless man sits at the end of a bed and watches TV. The lettering of the band name has been cleverly worked out compared to the previous albums. The contrast to the hotel room from the 1930s and the lettering make the album look futuristic.

Reviews

Sydney Morning Herald referred to Dream Days at the Hotel Existence as the band's first jaded album that promises excitement but doesn't keep its promise. The songs are uneventful and do not speak to the listener. PerthNow's Jay Hanna disagreed with the opinion of the Sydney Morning Herald, describing the album as causing waves to vibrate. Herald SunHit wrote that the album does not involve any style change in the music and is comparable to the album Oddyssey Number Five . Allmusic wrote that the album incorporates the classic features of the band Powderfinger. The critic praised the song I Don't Remember as a good start, but was very critical of the songs Lost and Running and Ballad of a Dead Man , which he described as boring, tired and sluggish.

"Black Tears" controversy

On May 2, 2007, the ninth song from the album Black Tears sparked some controversy over the Palm Islands death disagreement while negotiations on the case were taking place there. The lawyers of the accused Senior Sergeant Chris Hurley filed a complaint to the Queensland Attorney-General regarding the text one. Hurley's legal team wanted to change the lyrics in this song from “an island watch-house bed, a black man's lying dead” to “death of a Palm Island man, Mulrunji Doomadgee”. Singer Fanning announced in an interview that he did not want to cause a difference of opinion with this text. The album was released on the planned release date, but with an alternative version of the song Black Tears . Fanning wasn't angry about having to change his lyrics on this song, but he lamented the cowardice of other Australian musicians to challenge the status quo .

The Across the Great Divide Tour

The first tickets for the national concert tour were first sold on May 10, 2007 on the band's homepage. Ticket sales to the public started a day later. The band toured in New South Wales and north Victoria , among others . Australian pianist Lachlan Doley played the keyboard parts throughout the tour. Along with Doley, the band received positive reviews from the press and the public for their tour. The band played the single Lost and Running together with Doley at the variety festival Rove that took place on June 17, 2007. On August 4th, 2007 the band played at Splendor in the Grass , on August 18th they performed at Triple J's AWOL Concert in Karratha / Western Australia . On June 12, 2007 the band toured with the Australian rock group Silverchair . This tour was held not only in the capital cities of Australia and New Zealand, but also in 14 major cities within Australia.
