François Dufrêne (born September 21, 1930 in Paris , † December 12, 1982 ibid) was a French artist , representative of Lettrism , founder of poésie sonore and co-founder of Nouveau Réalisme in the 1960s.

life and work

Dufrêne's work cannot be assigned to any artistic medium. Like many of his contemporaries, he broke the conventional concept of artist: he was a painter , object artist , essayist , poet and singer.

As an experimental poet , Dufrêne developed the "poésie sonore" within sound poetry from 1953 and was able to do theoretical preparatory work for Henri Chopin , Carlfriedrich Claus , Bob Cobbing , Maurice Lemaître , Franz Mon , Josef Anton Riedl and Gerhard Rühm .

As a painter, he co-founded the artist group Nouveau Réalisme in Paris in 1960, which was inspired by the critic and theoretician Pierre Restany . The founding declaration of the New Realists was signed by Arman , François Dufrêne, Raymond Hains , Yves Klein , Martial Raysse , Daniel Spoerri , Jean Tinguely and Jacques de la Villeglé , while César , Mimmo Rotella , Niki de Saint Phalle , Gérard Deschamps and Christo later joined the movement connected.

Dufrêne's pictorial work consists of panel paintings on which he uses a dé-coll / age technique to depict the backs of billboards , while colleagues such as Raymond Hains and Mimmo Rotella turned to the visible front. Like the other members of the group, Dufrêne tried to use this technique to integrate the reality of everyday life into his art. He made a significant contribution to the development of object art and the early forms of action art .
