history

The place was created around 1900 in connection with the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway , whose Transbaikal section first led down the Schilka to Sretensk and opened in 1901. The alternative point opened on the route east of today's town was named Kuenga after the river that flows into the Schilka there . During the construction of the Amur Railway in the direction of Khabarovsk , Kuenga was chosen as the western connection point to the existing line. Construction began in 1907, the new connecting station at Dunajewo opened in 1908 , the western section in 1910 and the entire Amur Railway in 1916.

The two railway stations were later combined and redesigned under their current name Kuenga . With the extensive work on the double-track expansion of the Amur Railway in the 1930s, the importance of the station and the place grew. A small power station was built, Kuenga station was the site of a railway maintenance depot, and Dunajewo was given urban-type settlement status in 1938 .

In the 1950s the place was downgraded again to a rural settlement. In connection with the electrification of the Transbaikal section of the Trans-Siberian Railway in the 1990s, several residential buildings and other facilities were built in the village, and a new station building was opened in 2000.
