Duncan is a city in the southern US state of Oklahoma in the USA. It is 150 km southwest of Oklahoma City and 50 km west of Lawton. The city is the county seat of Stephens County and is known for its oil production.

history

Before the actual city was founded, the Chisholm Trail ran in what is now the east of the settlement. Because of its central location on the north-south running trail and the line connecting Fort Sill and Fort Arbuckle , William Duncan established a trading post there. The arrival of the first train on the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad on June 27, 1892 is considered the city's founding day.

Centrally located in the newly formed Stephens County, it became a county seat with the establishment of the US state Oklahoma in 1907. With oil discoveries in 1918, the city grew rapidly and reached its maximum population during World War II , which has since stagnated. The city has had a Cameron University satellite campus since 2004 .
