Durrës Plazh is a district of Durrës and one of the centers of beach tourism in Albania .

Durrës Plazh is the 13th district (lagja 13) within the administrative district 5 (rajoni 5) of the city of Durrës.

geography

The beach along the Bay of Durrës

As Plazhi the east of the city and is the port subsequent beach  ( Albanian  plazh ) called on the Bay of Durres. A long bathing resort with hotels, apartment and residential buildings is connected to the beach, which is bordered to the east by the Durrës – Peqin railway line , which runs parallel to the coast at a maximum distance of 500 meters.

The sandy beach of Durrës along the bay is about four kilometers long and stretches from the Ura e Dajlanit to Shkëmbi i Kavajës. The densely built-up district of Durrës Plazh ends after around three kilometers, where a cordoned-off, state-owned area occupied by a few villas begins on the bank (Blloku) . At the end of this approximately one kilometer long exclusion zone is the important Plepa intersection , where the city buses turn. To the south of it rises the Shkëmbi i Kavajës hill ( 105  m above sea level ), a sandstone rock directly on the shore, which  is protected as a national natural monument. The seaside resort of Golem follows south of the Kavaja rock . Another area on the beach near Plepa, where the NATO headquarters in Albania was previously located, is used by the Albanian army  as a vacation home. A monitoring center for the Albanian Navy is located on the other side of the tracks .

Shkallnur is in the southeast of Durrës Plazh, Arapaj in the east, Rrashbull in the northwest and Shkozet in the north. All these places in the agglomeration of Durrës have meanwhile grown together to form a settlement area.

tourism

Thanks to its sandy beach and very shallow water, the easily accessible Durrës Plazh is very popular for beach holidays. The origins go back to the interwar period when the first facilities were built. In Durrës Plazh there were huts and small villas in which wealthy Tirana residents spent the summer months to escape the heat of the interior.

"[...] la bella spiaggia sabbiosa che contorna la baia di Durazzo e che in questi ultimi anni, con la construzione di numerose villette, divenuta la Durazzo Bagni, una spiaggia di moda in Albania."

"[...] the beautiful sandy beach that bypassed the bay of Durrës and which in recent years has become Durrës Plazj, a beach in Albania with the construction of numerous small villas."

- Pirro Marconi : Albania (1940)
Hotel Adriatiku (1973)

After the Hotel Adriatiku (architect: Gani Strazimiri ) and other accommodations had been built on the beach at the end of the 1950s , Durrës Plazh had been the most important tourist destination in Albania for many decades. Durrës Plazh and the whole Albanian coast were to become a vacation paradise for workers from the Soviet Union and other countries of the Eastern Bloc . The FDJ built a camp in Durrës. More hotels, holiday homes for pioneers and workers' homes were built , which, along with simple “cabins”, were used by Albanian vacationers when, after the break between Hoxha  and Stalin,  tourists from the socialist countries stopped coming. In Adriatik less than 20,000 per year - - the few Western tourists were quartered, who attended in the 1970s and 1980s Albania in group travel.

A sunny November afternoon in Durrës Plazh

Today Durrës Plazh is a very lively seaside resort with a full beach in summer, which - along with other places on the Albanian coast - attracts many tourists from abroad. The majority are Albanians from Kosovo , which is why many hotels and restaurants bear the names of places in Kosovo. There are also those seeking relaxation from Tirana.

The once wide beach of Durrës Plazh and Golem, which was 150 to 180 meters wide and was accompanied, especially in the southern part, by a thick pine belt and poplar trees , has been severely affected by construction activities since 2000. Most of the trees were felled, sand dunes and parts of the beach were built over. The entire coastal area was " urbanized " so that today there is a closed front of multi-storey houses. Albanians speak of betonizimi , the “concreting” of nature.

Information on the number of tourists in Durrës varies greatly. By BIRN was discussed for 2019 from 150,000 to 200,000 tourists during the summer season. The Bashkia Durrës published the number of 600,000 tourists. In 2012 figures were published that spoke of over 7,000 hotel beds and 1.2 million tourists in Durrës - the vast majority of them in Durrës Plazh. In any case, tourism and the port are the most important economic sectors in the city.

traffic

The Rruga Pavarësia is the main street of Durrës Plazh

The national road SH4 , which connects Durrës with southern Albania and Greece  , crosses Durrës Plazh along its entire length. From Plepa to the south, it has been expanded into a four-lane motorway. The SH85 bypass road relieves the seaside resort of through traffic. A large bridge leads them in Plepa over the railway tracks and the SH56 , which leads from Plepa to Tirana. The SH2 , the motorway from Durrës to Tirana, ends at the northwest end of Durrës Plazh in Ura e Dajlanit .

Urban buses connect Durrës Plazh with the center of Durrës. In Plepa there is a bus terminal for buses that run between Tirana and southern Albania.

The Durrës train station is no longer served by the Hekurudha Shqiptare .
