ESL Pro League Season 8

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The ESL Pro League Season 8 ( EPL Season 8 for short ) was the eighth season of the ESL Pro League organized by the ESL . It started on September 26, 2018 and ended with the offline final in the Fyn Arena in Odense on December 9, 2018. Astralis not only won the tournament, but also the first season of the Intel Grand Slam .

format

In Europe and North America, a double round robin online championship was initially played for a place in the offline final. The eleven and nine best teams of the seventh season took part, as well as the winner of the ESEA Premier Season 27 and two teams from the ESL Pro League Season 7 relegation . During the regular season, each team played twice against each other in a best-of-one duel, with the winner receiving three points and the loser receiving no points. In the event of a tie, the game was extended by six rounds, the winner received two points and the loser one point.

After the online championship, the seven best teams from Europe and the six best from North America qualified for the offline final. In addition, there was one place to participate in the offline tournament for representatives from South America, Asia and Oceania, these were played in separate tournaments or championships.

Europe

As the winner of the ESEA Premier League Season 27, the German team BIG was able to secure direct promotion to EPL Season 8, in the relegation AGO Esports and Windigo Gaming prevailed and thus remain top-class. The players who started the season under the Space Soldiers organization have terminated their contracts during the season until the players have found a new organization, they are listed as "ex-Space Soldiers".

    North America

The winners of the ESEA Premier League Season 27 eUnited were able to secure promotion to the EPL for the first time , and compLexity and Splyce also prevailed in the relegation . Since OpTic Gaming has given up its North American team and has instead switched to a purely Danish team, a place became available which was taken over by MIBR . Splyce has also sacked its entire team, parts of the team have been taken over by EnVyUs , who are now taking over from Splyce. Since the entire former line-up of SK Gaming now plays for MIBR and SK Gaming has not set up its own team, this starting place has been transferred to INTZ eSports.

    Asia playoff

In addition to the two best teams from the China tournament and the winner of the Southeast Asia tournament, the winner of the "ESL India Premiership Fall Finals" will also take part in the playoffs. In these, the participant of the EPL Finals is determined in a best-of-three knockout mode. First, OpTic India won the Indian tournament with a victory over Slaughter Rage Army and thus gained the place to participate, but after Nikhil "forsaken" Kumawat was caught using a cheat in another tournament, ESL India checked and checked the hard drives of all players discovered that Kumawat also used the same cheat at the "ESL India Premiership Fall Finals". As a result, it was decided that OpTic India would be subsequently disqualified from the tournament and the final game would be declared null and void. In a replacement game, 2ez was able to secure participation in the Asian playoffs with a victory over Slaughter Rage Army.

    Relegation

Both the finals of the ESEA Season 29: Premier Division and the relegation of the ESL Pro League Season 8 were played offline in Dallas from December 5 to December 6, 2018 . Before the relegation began, ESL announced that the EPL's ninth season will see the number of teams in the European league increased to 16 teams. As a result, only the last place in the eighth season - AGO Esports, took part in the relegation. Another place to participate went to the fourth place in the ESEA Season 29 Epsilon eSports, but they canceled their participation, which allowed OpTic Gaming to participate.
