ESL Pro League Season 6

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The ESL Pro League Season 6 ( EPL Season 6 for short ) is the sixth season of the ESL Pro League organized by the ESL . It started on August 22, 2017 and ended with the offline final between FaZe Clan and SK Gaming on December 10, 2017 in Odense , which SK Gaming won. A total of US $ 1 million in prize money was distributed.

format

It was first played on every continent in a double round robin online championship for a place in the offline final. The eleven best teams from the fifth season took part, as well as the winner of the ESEA Premier Season 24 and two teams from the ESL Pro League Season 5 relegation. During the regular season, each team played twice against each other in a best-of-one duel, with the winner receiving three points and the loser receiving no points. New this season was a rule regarding overtime, which extended the game by six rounds in the event of a tie. The winner got two points and the loser one point. In the table, a game that was decided in extra time was always rated as 16:15 for the winner of extra time with regard to the round statistics ( R + , R- ) .

The six best teams in each division were allowed to take part in the final, which took place in Odense from December 5 to December 10, 2017. Teams between positions seven and eleven missed the finals, but qualified for the next season. The twelfth and thirteenth placed had to compete in the relegation against the second and third placed of the ESEA Premier Season 26 of their respective region, the last placed was automatically relegated to the ESEA Premier Season 27.

EU League

As the winner of the ESEA Premier Season 24, GODSENT was able to qualify directly for the EPL Season 6. BIG was able to qualify for the first time with a victory in the relegation , HellRaisers also managed a victory in the relegation and thus remains top-class. In addition to the relegated Team Kinguin, Virtus.pro is no longer involved this season due to two defeats in the relegation.

The winner of the preseason, G2 Esports , was overtaken by HellRaisers on the last day of the match and thus missed the playoffs. The other playoff contestants from Europe are fnatic , North , FaZe Clan , Astralis and Ninjas in pajamas . The German league newcomers BIG were pushed to last place on the penultimate matchday in a direct duel against Natus Vincere and are thus relegated directly to ESEA Season 27. GODSENT and Natus Vincere have to prove themselves in the relegation.

    NA League

Splyce , Ghost Gaming and Rogue are new to the American division . In the relegation of EPL Season 5, the Enigma6 Group initially prevailed, but as a result most of the team switched to Rogue, who are now participating in EPL Season 6 instead. OpTic Gaming made several changes to the squad in the offseason, so the entire team is now from Europe. This collides with the rules of the EPL, which subsequently demanded an explanation from the team under threat of disqualification . The official decision of the ESL provides for a "major penalty point" so that OpTic Gaming will deduct 10% of the prize money won, which will be divided between the other teams.

By not playing the Brazilian favorites from SK Gaming in the last two games of the season, OpTic Gaming ended the season in first place with SK Gaming directly behind. Team Liquid , Misfits, NRG eSports and Luminosity Gaming were also able to secure the playoff spots. Ghost Gaming was determined early on as a permanent relegation, Rogue as a safe participant in the relegation early on. Immortals played their last four games of the season from Brazil, had a correspondingly high ping on the American servers and clearly lost all four games. So they slipped to a relegation place on the last game day.

    Offline finals

The offline finals will take place from December 5, 2017 to December 10, 2017 in the Arena Fyn in Odense, and for the first time in Denmark .

    Group stage

The six best teams from both divisions will be divided into two groups in which they will face each opponent once. The three best teams in each group advance to the play-offs, with the two first-placed teams advancing directly to the semifinals, the second and third-placed teams advancing to the quarter-finals. Quarter and semi-finals are decided in a best-of-three, in the final the EPL Season 6 winner is determined by means of a best-of-five. When dividing the two groups, an electoral process was used for the first time, in which the teams, beginning with the division winners, were each allowed to determine a team to play in the other group. As the division winner of the region that won EPL Season 5, fnatic chose the yellow group and was therefore the first to put a team in the red group. This resulted in the following distribution of the participating teams (with seasonal placement in brackets):

    Yellow group Group red

    Yellow group

The first matchday was full of surprises when fnatic started the group stage with a win after extra time against favorite FaZe Clan. Between Luminosity Gaming and the HellRaisers, the decision in favor of the Brazilians was only found in a triple extension. The first appearance of the home team Astralis ended with a narrow defeat after double extra time, while fnatic had to take a clear defeat against HellRaiseres. Faze Clan and Team Liquid looked like the second defeat of the European star team for a long time, but a late comeback secured FaZe the first victory of the tournament. Astralis also secured their first victory, Luminosity Gaming lost 11:16 . The first matchday of the yellow group ended with two European winners, fnatic defeated Luminosity Gaming and HellRaisers won against Team Liquid. The table status after matchday one was quite a surprise, HellRaisers at the top ahead of fnatic and Astralis in the quarter-finals, FaZe Clan, Luminosity Gaming and Team Liquid occupied the last three places and would have been eliminated. Nevertheless, it was an exciting starting position for the second matchday, as practically all teams had a chance of a playoff place.

The second matchday began with the top game between FaZe and Astralis, which FaZe clearly won 16: 5 on de_mirage . At the same time, Team Liquid tried to use its last chance to reach the playoffs, but suffered a bitter 18:22 defeat after double extra time against fnatic . The European team HellRaisers was able to continue its strong performance from the first day in its first game on the second day and defeated Astralis 16:13 , whose playoff chances were therefore increasingly smaller. HellRaisers, on the other hand, was now sure to participate in the playoff, as was FaZe, who won against Luminosity Gaming 16:12 and deprived the Brazilians of their chances for the playoffs. The fight for third place in the table was won by the Swedish team from fnatic against Astralis on de_inferno with a clear 16: 7 . All participants in the knockout phase were now certain, and FaZe secured the direct ticket to the semifinals in a direct duel against HellRaisers.

    Group red

In the red group there was a favorite victory at the beginning of the tournament, SK Gaming clearly defeated the local heroes from North with 16: 7 , in the purely North American duel between Misfits and NRG the former secured the opening victory. The winner of the North American division OpTic had to start the tournament with a narrow defeat against the Ninjas in pajamas, North conceded the second defeat against Misfits which was also quite clearly 9:16 . In the top American duel between SK and OpTic, the North Americans just got the upper hand and won 16:14 , NRG secured their first win against the ninjas in pajamas in the second game of the tournament. The first day was rounded off with a win for NRG over North and a 16:10 win for Optic over Misfits. The participants in the North American division clearly dominated the first matchday, with Misfits, OpTic and NRG tied for points with two wins and one defeat. Only behind in the lower half of the table were SK and NiP each with three points, while the Danish team North found themselves without any points at the end of the table, who thus had practically no chance for a playoff place.

The second matchday in the red group began with two games on de_overpass , SK Gaming set the course for the knockout round with the 16: 9 win against Ninjas in pajamas, while North only scored the first points in his penultimate game of the group phase a 16:11 win over OpTic Gaming. A 16:13 defeat of the ninjas in pajamas against Misfits ended the playoff dreams of the Swedes, but the Americans could always count on the knockout round. SK Gaming also secured a playoff spot with a 16: 9 win over NRG. With a 16: 7 win against Misfits, SK Gaming secured first place in the table and thus advanced to the semi-finals. A superior 16: 3 win on de_cobblestone against NRG secured OpTic Gaming second place in the table and thus completed the playoff picture.

In summary, the group phase of EPL Season 6 had a lot of surprises in store, above all the dominant appearance of the HellRaisers, who in the regular season were only able to fix their participation in the offline tournament on the last match day. From the hosts' point of view, the elimination of both Danish teams before the knockout rounds played in front of the audience must be described as a surprising disappointment.

    Playoffs

The first quarter-final was the purely European clash between Optic Gaming and fnatic. After a narrow win by Optic on de_inferno , the Swedes were able to win both de_train and de_mirage in contested games and thus advance to the semi-finals. The second quarter-finals between HellRaisers and Misfits began with an exciting game on de_cbble , which was only decided in favor of the Americans after double overtime at 22:18 . On de_overpass , the playoff was a clear affair ( 16: 6 ) for the Misfits team, who should now face SK Gaming in the semifinals.

In the semifinals there were two clear favorites. In the first semifinals the FaZe Clan was able to decide the final in just two maps, the team around Olof "olofmeister" Kajbjer won with 16: 7 and 16:10 against his former team fnatic. The second semifinal was the all-American duel between SK Gaming and Misfits, here the matter was even clearer. The North Americans were only able to record seven round wins in two maps, so SK Gaming rose to the grand finale with 16: 6 and 16: 1 wins .

The grand finale was the expected clash between the two big favorites FaZe Clan and SK Gaming, which was exciting from the start. On de_inferno , FaZe was able to score the first point after two narrow halves ( 8: 7 , 8: 6 ). On de_overpass , FaZe was able to win the first half on the CT side 8: 7 , the second half brought a dominant performance from SK Gaming, who were able to equalize with 11:16 . At de_mirage everything was decided for SK Gaming at the change of sides ( 2:13 ). Outstanding was the performance of "In-Game-Leader" Gabriel "TrapN" Toledo , who achieved the best value in all relevant statistics and was awarded a performance rating ( 2.0) of 1.46 delivered the best performance of the entire final. SK Gaming already used the first decision game on de_train , although a more exciting course would not have been possible here either. After two balanced halves ( 7: 8 , 8: 7 ), a decision had to be found in extra time. The FaZe Clan could only score one point here, so SK Gaming finally won 19:16 and was crowned champion of the EPL Season 6.

    Relegation

The relegation of the ESL Pro League was largely played offline in New York City , with the two remaining teams per division being determined in a double-elimination system.

    EU relegation

Since Godsent was initially unable to travel due to a snow storm, parts of the EU relegation had to be made up for and carried out online. Natus Vincere prevailed against Godsent in the upper tournament tree and was thus able to secure the EPL Season 7 participation. In the tournament tree below, the Space Soldiers team first eliminated eXtatus and in the qualification game Godsent, so the Turkish team will take part in the ESL Pro League for the first time.

    Trivia

In the course of the tournament, the organizer changed its rules regarding player transfer regulations. The number of lineup changes allowed was only reduced to two before the season, but due to the complications surrounding Team Immortals , the teams were approved a third transfer during the season.
