The Darmstädter Echo is a regional newspaper for the city of Darmstadt and the Darmstadt-Dieburg district .

The newspaper is published by Echo Newspapers GmbH , a wholly-owned subsidiary of Echo Medien GmbH , which has been 100% owned by VRM since summer 2015 , with which Echo Medien GmbH established the Rüsselsheim printing center in the Rhein-Main joint venture in 2010 Pressure had established.

Until the takeover by VRM, the Echo newspapers included six headers , including the Rüsselsheimer Echo (since 1956), the Groß-Gerauer Echo (1977, formerly Heimat-Zeitung for the Groß-Gerau district ), the Odenwälder Echo (since 1986 , former Odenwälder Heimatzeitung ), the Starkenburger Echo (since 1985, formerly Südhessische Post ) and the Ried Echo (since 2004). According to the antitrust approval of the takeover by VRM, the Rüsselsheimer Echo had to be handed over to the Frankfurter Neue Presse of the Frankfurter Societät group. The distribution area covers almost the entire southern Hessian area. Since 1999, readers have also found a wide range of news from southern Hesse and the world on the Internet.

Regional competitors with their regional editions include the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung , the Frankfurter Rundschau and, in the south, the Mannheimer Morgen . The regional sections of the Frankfurter Rundschau for Darmstadt, Darmstadt-Dieburg and the Groß-Gerau district were written from 2009 to September 2016 by editors from Echo Newspapers GmbH. Since autumn 2016, the Frankfurter Rundschau has been reporting with its own editors from Darmstadt and the two districts of Darmstadt-Dieburg and the district of Groß-Gerau.

The sold circulation is 36,890 copies, a decrease of 45.4 percent since 1998.

history

The Darmstädter Echo was the first journalistic re-establishment in the badly destroyed city after the Second World War . Its first edition appeared on November 21, 1945. The politically innocent writer Johann Sebastian Dang and the publicist Paul Rodemann , who was persecuted during the Nazi era , had previously received a license from the American administration to publish a politically independent newspaper. Rodemann brought in the printing specialist Max Bach as operations manager. In 1947 Hans J. Reinowski became the third licensee. In the years that followed, he built up the editorial team as publisher, and in 1949 Max Bach became a partner, later managing director of the publishing house and the printing company.

In 1950, the publishing house acquired an old barracks building on Holzhofallee, which - after many renovations - is still the headquarters of the publishing house and Darmstadt's editorial offices. All of the publisher's print products have been produced in the new RheinMain printing center in Rüsselsheim am Main since October 2010 .

In 1986 the "Darmstädter Echo Verlag und Druckerei GmbH" bought the ailing newspaper competitor, the Darmstädter Tagblatt , which was the third oldest German newspaper at the time.

The chief editor was initially Hans J. Reinowski. He was followed by Kurt W. Reinhold as editor-in-chief. He was initially chief of staff and deputy editor-in-chief and from 1970 editor-in-chief. Reinhold has been a partner in the newspaper since 1965; In 1986 he left. His successor as editor-in-chief was his longtime deputy Roland Hof. From June 2005 to November 2012 Jörg Riebartsch was editor-in-chief. He left the company on November 7, 2012. Michael Horn - deputy editor-in-chief since August 2007 - became his successor. In August 2015 he was replaced by Lars Oliver Hennemann from VRM.

Until 2009 the partners were the brothers Horst Bach and Hans-Peter Bach. Since Horst Bach's death, his brother was the sole publisher. The newspaper is economically and politically independent. The main parts of politics, business, sport and features are also produced in Darmstadt.

In February 2015, the Echo media group was sold to the Rhein Main publishing group, subject to the approval of the Federal Cartel Office. In the course of the cartel proceedings, the Echo media group announced on June 11, 2015 that it would sell the Rüsselsheimer Echo to the media group Frankfurter Societät . On July 6, 2015, the takeover of the Echo media group to the Rhein Main publishing group was approved. On the same day, the redesigned website in the corporate design of the Allgemeine Zeitung Mainz went online at echo-online.de .

In March 2016, the Echo editorial team moved to the Wella campus on Berliner Allee .

Searched for an online comment

In June 2014, the Darmstadt public prosecutor obtained a search warrant against the publishing house in order to determine the identity of a user who had published an apparently disparaging comment about executives of the Mühltaler office on the Echo's website . After Hans-Peter Bach had released the data in order to prevent the corresponding computers , which were essential for newspaper operation, from being taken, judges at the regional court found formal deficiencies and the resulting illegality of the search in September 2014 . This had previously caused a nationwide media response, as there seemed no proportionality for this interference with the freedom of the press .
