Edda Kainz (born February 24, 1940 in Immenstadt im Allgäu ) is a former Austrian ski racer . Between 1959 and 1965 she achieved numerous victories and podiums in international races and took part in the 1964 Winter Olympics.

biography

Kainz comes from the Kleinwalsertal in Vorarlberg and is a niece of the ski racer Resi Hammerer . In the second half of the 1950s she achieved her first successes on a regional level as well as in the Allgäu and Bavarian championships, after starting regular training in the Kleinwalsertal ski club in 1957. In 1959, Kainz achieved her first podium places in FIS races with second place in a downhill run in Kleinwalsertal and third place in the Parsenn derby in Davos . In 1961 she celebrated her first victory in the slalom in Bad Wiessee , whereupon she was accepted into the national team of the Austrian Ski Association at the end of the season . In the next few years she achieved several victories and numerous podiums, even if only rarely in the races with the most international participants.

In the winter of 1961/1962, Kainz achieved several podium places, including a second place in the downhill run from Saalbach-Hinterglemm and third place in the giant slalom from Saalfelden and Arosa as well as in the downhill and combination of Abetone . In 1963 she celebrated her second victory in the downhill from Saalbach-Hinterglemm, where she also came third in the giant slalom. Further podium places in winter were second place in the slalom in Zell am See and two third places in the slalom and the giant slalom on Mount Etna . At the dress rehearsal for next year's Olympic Winter Games in Innsbruck , she took fourth place in the downhill. With further good results in the 1963/1964 season, Kainz finally succeeded in joining the Austrian downhill Olympic team. In the Olympic downhill run on the Axamer Lizum , she took 22nd place, which hardly anyone noticed in view of the Austrian triple victory by Christl Haas , Edith Zimmermann and Traudl Hecher .

In the 1964/1965 season there was a victory in the downhill from Narvik and a number of other podium places in the downhill and combination of the Krummholz races in Haus im Ennstal , in slalom and giant slalom of the Golden Fox in Marburg , in giant slalom, downhill and combination of Gällivare and in Giant slalom and combination from Narvik. After this season, Kainz surprisingly announced her retirement at the age of 25.
