Eddie Wasserman

Edward J. "Eddie" Wasserman (born March 5, 1923 in Smackover , Arkansas ; † May 25, 1992 in Tenafly , Bergen County , New Jersey ) was an American jazz saxophonist (mainly tenor, but also alto, baritone) , Clarinetist (also bass clarinet) and flautist of swing and modern jazz .

Life

He studied after military service in World War II until 1948 at the Juilliard School and received a master's degree as a teacher at Columbia University . After that he was in the bands of Benny Goodman , Artie Shaw , Charlie Barnet , Buddy DeFranco , Charlie Spivak , Stan Kenton , Chico O'Farrill , Louis Bellson and with Gene Krupa (1957), with whom he toured in Europe. In the 1950s he lived in Carmel-by-the-Sea (California) with his mother and played with local musicians (Ernie Stock, Claude Gilroy, Ernie Sheriff, Jack Mathis) and also with the Carmel Bach Festival Chorus. In 1959 he toured with Jazz at the Philharmonic and from 1960 in Gerry Mulligan's band . He also toured Latin America with Noro Morales and played in the orchestra of several Broadway musicals. For the last 20 years of his life, he lived in New Jersey, where he worked as a high school teacher. He also taught summer schools at the Center of the Performing Arts of New York and New York University .

He performed with Stan Kenton , Louie Bellson , Gene Krupa , George Williams , Elliot Lawrence (Swinging at the Steel Pier, Fantasy 1956), Lena Horne , Jimmy Giuffre (The Music Man, Atlantic 1959), Bob Brookmeyer (1956) and Tony Scott (in the septet, RCA 1956).

Tom Lord lists 125 recordings in his jazz discography from 1948 to 1981. He was married and had a son and a daughter.
