The Bad Berleburg – Allendorf railway , also known as the Obere Edertalbahn or Ederberglandbahn , runs from Bad Berleburg to Allendorf (Eder) , where it joins the Nuttlar – Frankenberg railway ("Ruhr-Eder-Bahn"). It branched off at the Hörre junction from the Erndtebrück – Bad Berleburg railway (“Rothaarbahn”) and is 36.2 kilometers long.
history
opening
After the Nuttlar – Frankenberg railway from Winterberg to Frankenberg (Eder) was opened in 1908 , construction work on the Upper Edertal Railway progressed. It was opened in several stages. Several of the station buildings on the route were built by government builder Alois Holtmeyer .
section | Opened on |
---|---|
Bad Berleburg - Raumland | August 1, 1910 |
Raumland - Arfeld | August 15, 1911 |
Arfeld - Hatzfeld (Eder) | April 1, 1911 |
Hatzfeld (Eder) - Allendorf (Eder) | November 17, 1910 |
In the years after the opening, traffic developed extremely positively. From the 1950s , however, it went back again.
Shutdown
Passenger traffic by rail ended completely on May 30, 1981. In previous years, demand had fallen so sharply that the company was no longer profitable. The route was also closed for freight traffic between Arfeld and Hatzfeld on the same day. A year later it also ended between Bad Berleburg and Arfeld. This section was dismantled in 1983. The rest of the freight traffic was largely ended in 1995 and 2002 respectively. The section between Allendorf (Eder) and Battenberg (Eder) was last used by freight trains in 2017. From Battenberg-Auhammer, the line to Bad Berleburg has been completely dismantled.

Todays situation
Today there is no longer any freight traffic between Allendorf and Battenberg, which ended completely in 2017. Wood was loaded in the Battenberg (Eder) station. The section up to the Auhammer has not had any freight traffic since 2002, but has not yet been dismantled with the exception of a short section in the Auhammer area.
From 2005 to 2007, under the auspices of the Kurhessenbahn , excursion trains of the 628.2 and 628.4 series ran on Sundays and public holidays between Frankenberg (Eder) and Battenberg-Auhammer from May to October . Since the end of excursion traffic in 2007, the section has only been used by passenger trains, such as the Eder Bike Tour in June every year until 2017. Viessmann is also no longer supplied.
Today (as of January 9, 2020): the route is completely closed.
Edertalradweg / Ederauenradweg
In the section between Bad Berleburg and Auhammer, the Ederauenradweg was partly relocated to the old railway line. For this purpose, the route was de-dedicated , the rails removed and most of the route paved.
