Edith-Maria Klestil (* 13. November 1932 in Vienna , † 29. March 2011 ibid ), born Wielander , was the former wife of the Austrian diplomat and politician Thomas Klestil .

Edith-Maria grew up as the only child of the post office clerk Leopold Wielander and his wife Rosalia Wielander in the 3rd district of Vienna , Landstrasse . In 1932 and 1938, his parents' apartment was at 3., Paulusplatz 9, in the Erdberg district (Vienna) , not far from the St. Marx slaughterhouse, which no longer exists . (Thomas Klestil also grew up in Erdberg; he attended high school in Hagenmüllergasse.)

Leopold Wielander was born on October 25, 1896 and died at the age of 54 in March 1951. Rosalia Wielander was born around 1896 and died in April 1985 at the age of 89. Both grave, in which Edith-Maria Klestil was buried, is in the Vienna Central Cemetery (group 153, row 28, number 38).

In 1949, at the age of 17, she met Thomas Klestil, who was the same age. She was married to him from June 8, 1957 to September 1998.

Her trained profession was women's fashion director. With Thomas Klestil she had two sons and a daughter.

In 1992 Thomas Klestil was elected Federal President; Edith Klestil was active with him in the election campaign.

In January 1994 Edith separated from her husband when she no longer wanted to accept his affair with Margot Löffler . When they divorced in September 1998, it was agreed that Edith Klestil would be granted the right to rent an apartment on Vienna's Landesgerichtsstrasse .

The separation of the Klestil couple further alienated the Federal President from Austria's conservative camp, which put him up for election in 1992. Edith Klestil, on the other hand, received numerous expressions of sympathy.
