Martha Kyrle

Martha Kyrle (born Schärf ; born April 17, 1917 in Vienna ; † July 15, 2017 there ) was an Austrian doctor and philanthropist .

Life

Martha Kyrle's mother was Hilda Schärf , who had suffered from severe cardiovascular disease since 1944 and died in 1956. Her father was the lawyer and later Federal President Adolf Schärf (1890-1965).

After graduating from high school , Martha attended the Reinhardtseminar in autumn 1935 , but also studied English . In 1937 she was engaged at the Schauspielhaus Zurich ; from mid-1940 she studied medicine and became a specialist in dermatology . The daughter of Federal President Adolf Schärf acted as First Lady of Austria during the tenure of her widowed father from 1957 to 1965 and was host to Jacqueline Kennedy and Nina Khrushchova on the occasion of the American-Soviet summit in Vienna in 1961 . She also took care of state visits and a. Queen Juliana of the Netherlands, the kings of Sweden and Denmark and the Thai king Bhumibol with his wife Sirikit .

After studying medicine , she married the doctor and university professor Paul Kyrle . Her older son Johannes Kyrle was ambassador and, as Secretary General for Foreign Affairs (2002-2013), the highest-ranking official in the Austrian Foreign Ministry. The younger son Paul Alexander Kyrle is a university professor for internal medicine at the Vienna General Hospital .

As early as January 1 , 1939, she was involved in Vienna as a carer for children in socially vulnerable families. In 1962 she was significantly involved in the founding of UNICEF in Austria and was president of this organization until 2009; even after that, she continued to be closely associated with UNICEF as honorary president. As the long-time president and protector of the Austrian UNICEF committee, she was particularly committed to sick and disabled children. In 1993 she received the Bruno Kreisky Prize for services to human rights .
