Edmundo Abaya

Edmundo Madarang Abaya (born January 19, 1929 in Candon , † September 20, 2018 in San Juan City ) was a Filipino clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Nueva Segovia .

Life

Edmundo Abaya was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Nueva Segovia on March 21, 1953 .

Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Laoag on December 11, 1978 . The Apostolic Nuncio in the Philippines , Archbishop Bruno Torpigliani , donated him episcopal ordination on January 19 of the next year ; Co- consecrators were Antonio Lloren Mabutas , Archbishop of Davao , and Victorino Cristobal Ligot , Bishop of San Fernando de La Union . The inauguration took place on January 31, 1979. His episcopal motto was "Cor Ardens Caritate".

On May 22, 1999, Pope John Paul II appointed him Archbishop of Nueva Segovia. On February 12, 2005, John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation.

Abaya was chairman of the CBCP Commission on Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs from 1988 to 1989 and also a member of the CBCP's Permanent Council from 1990 to 1991.
