Edouard Bauty (born April 13, 1874 in Lausanne , Canton of Vaud , † September 4, 1968 in Geneva ) was a Swiss journalist . From 1911 to 1918 he was editor-in-chief of the Geneva newspaper Tribune de Genève .

Life

Edouard Bauty was the son of Charles Bauty (1842-1910), Protestant pastor at the cantonal hospital in Lausanne. The Bauty family originally came from the Dauphiné . Edouard Bauty attended the Progymnasium (where he was a schoolmate of the later Swiss General Henri Guisan ) and the classical grammar school in Lausanne, then studied theology at the University of Lausanne and graduated in 1897 with a licentiate . After completing his studies, Bauty attended the Friedrich Fehr art school in Munich for two years . Accordingly, in addition to his work as a journalist, he also appeared as an artist . He organized several vernissages with his works. In 1902 he married Anna Berthe Raach in Paris .

Professional career

From 1900 Bauty worked in Paris as a correspondent for various Swiss newspapers such as the Feuille d'Avis de Lausanne and the Feuille d'Avis de Neuchâtel and wrote for French magazines such as the Lectures pour tous by Hachette Livre and the daily Le Siècle . After returning to Switzerland in 1906 he became the Bundeshaus correspondent for the Feuille d'Avis de Lausanne and the Tribune de Genève as well as the French weekly newspaper L'Illustration and the daily newspapers Le Petit Parisien and The Sun ( New York ). In April 1911 he took over the editorship of the Tribune and directed the newspaper until the end of January 1918. He opposed during the First World War the censorship and expressed Tribune a France friendly stamp on. Sales of the newspaper abroad increased significantly during this time. Then he worked again as a correspondent for various Swiss newspapers. In 1919 he founded the monthly magazine Le Mercure Suisse . As editor-in-chief of the magazine, he wanted to use it to spread information about the Swiss economy abroad by name. In 1920 he was one of the first journalists to be accredited to the League of Nations and also worked as a correspondent for the Swedish press and the Paris Journal des débats politiques et littéraires . From 1945 he worked as a correspondent at the United Nations and other international organizations in Geneva, namely the World Health Organization (WHO). On Tuesdays in the Feuille d'Avis de Neuchâtel he wrote a highly acclaimed column on the front page under the name «Franchomme». He was active well into old age and the recognized doyen of the Geneva press. His artistic talent and his training as a draftsman allowed him to illustrate some of his articles himself.

Bauty was President of the Swiss Press Association (VSP, today imprint ) and from 1940-1945 President and then Honorary President of the “Association de la Presse Étrangère en Suisse” (APES) founded in 1928.
