Eduard Brauer (poet)

Christian Wilhelm Ludwig Eduard Brauer (born November 2, 1811 in Karlsruhe , † January 8, 1871 in Mannheim ) was a lawyer and poet from Baden .

Life

Brauer was the son of the civil servant and politician Johann Nicolaus Friedrich Brauer and his second wife Louise, nee Preuscher. He attended the Karlsruhe Lyceum , then from 1830 he studied law at the University of Göttingen . In 1831 he moved to Heidelberg University , where Carl Joseph Anton Mittermaier and Anton Friedrich Justus Thibaut were among his professors. In 1834 he completed his studies with the legal state examination.

Brauer began his professional career in Karlsruhe, his first permanent job, he received in 1839 the upper office Pforzheim . In 1840 he married Rosa Kramer from Cologne . In 1843 he was transferred to the Landamt in Karlsruhe, where he was promoted to magistrate the following year. In 1845 he came to Mannheim as court judge. In 1856 he was transferred to Bruchsal in the same capacity . In 1864 he was appointed to the Badischer Oberhofgericht in Mannheim, where he stayed until his death.

Brauer's first lyric publications were four religious poems in the magazine Sonntag-Abend. Sheets for educated Christians in 1834. In 1835 he published his first volume of poems , four years later their second collection . He became known mainly for his ballads , in which he reproduced numerous Baden sagas in poetic form. In 1845 he published a collection of such legendary ballads under the title Legends and Stories of the City of Baden in the Grand Duchy and its near and distant surroundings in poetic guise . In addition to their own poems, the volume included works by Adolf and August Stöber , August Schnezler , Karl Simrock and other contemporary poets. He also published numerous poems in magazines and muse almanacs such as the morning paper for educated readers , the German Chronicle or the Alsatian New Year's newspapers . In addition to legendary ballads, which he published under the title Badische Sagenbilder in Lied und Reim in 1858 in the first and in 1867 in the second edition, he wrote political poetry that expressed his moderately liberal sentiments.

One of Brauer's best-known poems, Die 400 Pforzheimer , was printed in numerous anthologies at the time, for example in Karl Simrock's Rheinsagen and August Nodnagel's Seven Books of German Sagas and Legends . It is about an alleged heroic deed by 400 Pforzheim soldiers in the Battle of Wimpfen during the Thirty Years' War .

In the legal field he was also active as a writer. In addition to numerous contributions to specialist magazines, he wrote the works The oral procedure before the teacher in civil disputes and The German jury laws in their main provisions . In 1870 he also took over the editing of the annals of the grand ducal courts of Baden .
