Eduard Rieger (politician, 1865)
Eduard Rieger (born November 15, 1865 in Jirkov , Bohemia , † June 28, 1938 in Vienna ) was an Austrian politician of the Social Democratic Party , writer and journalist .
Life
After attending the elementary and community school in Görkau (Jirkov) in Bohemia, then a crown land of Austria , Eduard Rieger did an apprenticeship with a draper in Kratzau ( Chrastava ) near Reichenberg ( Liberec ) and then worked in a dye works in Spittal Drau in Austria. After his release as a journeyman, he went on a hike and came to Germany and Tyrol .
Organizationally active as a social democrat since 1880 , Eduard Rieger began to work as a writer and editor for various party magazines in Liberec in Northern Bohemia , Brno in Moravia and in Vienna . In the years 1889 and 1891 he was a delegate at international socialist congresses and was arrested and convicted several times for political crimes.
Rieger was a member of the Reichsrat from 1897 to 1918 ; in October 1918, after the end of Austria-Hungary , he was a member of the Provisional National Assembly in Vienna, in March 1919 of the Austrian Constituent National Assembly and was a member of the National Council from 1920 to 1934 . Rieger, arrested several times at the beginning of his career as a writer and journalist, campaigned for the freedom of the press as a member of the National Council in addition to socio-political issues - including comprehensive education for employees . He wrote plays and poems, mainly from working class life, as well as folk art treatises.
