Eduard Sältzer (also Saelzer ) (born January 29, 1811 in Weimar , † July 14, 1880 in Eisenach ; full name: Carl Friedrich Eduard Sältzer ) was a German architect and brick factory owner. He was considered a pioneer of the German brick industry, introduced the Hoffmann ring furnace in Thuringia and played a key role in its further development. Sältzer created the development plan for the newly built Eisenacher Südstadt and made a significant contribution to the development of this emerging district. Like his father Wilhelm Sältzer , he was involved in the rebuilding of the Wartburg in the 19th century.

Life

Eduard Sältzer was born in Weimar in 1811 as the son of the Grand Ducal Saxon Building Councilor Wilhelm Sältzer and his wife Maria Friederike Sommer. In the sixth year of his life he received his first private tuition, attended the Eisenach high school and was then apprenticed to a builder in Kassel by his father in preparation for his future profession . After completing his apprenticeship, he went to Munich and studied architecture and construction technology with the architect Friedrich Wilhelm von Gärtner .

After graduating, he went to New York with his younger brother Alexander , who was also an architect , where he found plenty of work. To continue his education, he returned to Germany a few years later and attended the Berlin Business Academy , a predecessor of today's Technical University of Berlin.

On March 17, 1860, he married Anna Carolina Maria Wittich, a daughter of the Grand Ducal Saxon-Weimar-Eisenach Chancellor Gustav Wittich . This marriage had a daughter Therese (1861-1943), who married Alfred Appelius , who would later become President of the State Parliament, in 1886 .

After completing his second degree, he again worked in New York as a freelance architect, designed various smaller and larger buildings and ran a hydropathic institute . After receiving news from Germany that his father was seriously ill, he returned to Eisenach and took over the management of the Eisenach brickworks that his father had built. He recognized the value of Hoffmann's ring oven , had one built on the brickyard's property and, in conjunction with the inventor, contributed significantly to its spread in Thuringia. Many ring kiln owners from all over Germany received advice and instructions from Sältzer about the operation and treatment of the kiln, with which he could burn solid and semi-finished stones, drain pipes and roof tiles, gypsum, lime and cement without any problems. After the brickworks had taken a great boom, it was enlarged and transferred to the Eisenacher Actien brickworks under his management . Sältzer was a founding member of the German Association for the Manufacture of Bricks, Pottery, Lime and Cement and its sponsor.

In addition to his work as director of the brickworks, Sältzer worked as a freelance architect in Eisenach. In 1872 he drew up the development plan for the newly built Eisenacher Südstadt, designed and built villas and town houses for the up-and-coming residential city, which are still almost completely preserved today. Like his father, he was involved in rebuilding the Wartburg.
