Eduard Schmidlin

Eduard Schmidlin (born July 8, 1808 in Rottenburg am Neckar , † February 5, 1890 in Dresden ) was a German - Swiss gardener , revolutionary , botanical author and hotelier .

Life

Schmidlin was born in 1808 as the son of a law firm and after attending grammar school he studied natural sciences in Tübingen , where he became a member of the Feuerreiter fraternity in 1828 . After giving up his studies, he became a gardening assistant in Stuttgart and worked in the royal gardening shop. After participating in the Frankfurt Wachensturm , he hid in the Austrian Legation Palace so that he could escape unnoticed. However, he was later arrested as a participant in the Franckh-Koseritz conspiracy and sentenced to imprisonment in Hohenasperg fortress . After his release he worked as an art and landscape gardener as well as the author of numerous botanical works in Konstanz and Stuttgart, among others . In 1857 he was appointed by Conrad von Rappard to design the garden and landscape for the first hotel on Giessbach and was soon very successful as a hotel and inn manager. In the years up to 1870 he made the Giessbach a major attraction for tourism. In 1868 he was in Brienz for Swiss citizens appointed. From 1872 to 1882 he was the manager of the Hotel Bellevue in Thun . He then retired into private life and died in Dresden in 1890. His tomb has been preserved to this day.
