The Giessbach is a Swiss mountain in the Bernese Oberland , which in the canton of Bern near the Brienzerer Alpweide Axalp from the south to the northeastern part of Lake Brienz flows. Its headwaters are the high valleys and basins of the Sägistal- Faulhorn area. The brook rushes over the imposing Giessbach Falls ( ), which cascade down in water cascades with 14 steps over 500 m height difference, also known collectively as the Giessbach Falls . At one point , a footpath leads under the waterfall over a bridge, which you can walk in the spray .

history

The Brienz pastor Daniel Wyss and the Brienz school director Johannes Kehrli made it easier for guests of the emerging tourism to visit the famous falls in the 19th century. Kehrli created a path from the lakeshore to the second lowest fall and set up a bench, while Wyss opened up access to the upper falls and poetically named the fourteen waterfalls of Bernese heroes. From 1856 to 1870 Eduard Schmidlin was administrator in Giessbach. During this time he laid out the park and became the first director of a pension house built in 1858.

At the foot of the waterfall is the historic Grandhotel Giessbach , which is connected to the "Giessbach See" ship station of BLS Schifffahrt Berner Oberland by the Giessbachbahn , one of the oldest funicular railways in Europe . It was built from 1873 to 1875 by the French hotelier family Hauser. Karl Hauser commissioned the most famous hotel builder of the time, Horace Edouard Davinet , to plan a new building.

In 1979 the hotel closed its doors after years of decline. The entire original complex was to be torn down and replaced by a modern concrete building in the style of a “jumbo chalet”. In 1983 the Swiss environmentalist Franz Weber , with the help of his association Helvetia Nostra and the Giessbach Foundation , which he founded, succeeded in acquiring the property and the 22 hectare property and placing it under monument protection. In the following years, the hotel was restored in stages.
