The Faulhorn is a 2681  m above sea level. M. high mountain in the Bernese Alps in the Swiss canton of Bern . Its summit lies on the border between the communities of Grindelwald and Iseltwald ; of the latter it is the highest point. The Faulhorn gets its name from the «Fulen», loose rock layers made of marl and slate . There is a mountain hotel on the summit , this is in the area of the municipality of Grindelwald.

panorama

From the summit of the Faulhorn there are views to the north and west over Lake Brienz and Lake Thun to the Jura . In the south you can see the four-thousand-meter peaks of the Bernese Alps , including the Eiger , Mönch and Jungfrau .

Samuel Birmann , landscape painter of the Romantic period, painted the panorama from the Faulhorn on 5./6. August 1820.

history

In the “Magazin für die Naturheilkunde Helvetiens” from 1783 a first ascent of the Faulhorn by the Grindelwald pastor Friedrich Kuhn is mentioned.

In 1822 an inn patent was granted for the summit of the Faulhorn. The following summer, a restaurant went into operation - at that time the highest in the Alps. The Berghotel Faulhorn , which still exists today, opened in 1832.

The Faulhorn was repeatedly the site of meteorological tests. In 1880, a "self-registering thermometer" was installed on the summit, which provided hourly weather records for one summer. In the fall, however, the attempt was ended as no one was on the summit to wind the clockwork.

Projects to develop the Faulhorn in terms of traffic engineering failed. In 1907, a narrow-gauge railway for the route from Grosse Scheidegg to Faulhorn was granted a concession. However, the project failed due to resistance from homeland security. There were already ideas for a railway line from Schynigen Platte to Faulhorn and for a cable car from Grosse Scheidegg to Faulhorn that were never implemented.
