Eduard Weichberger was born in 1843 as the sixth child of the manor owner and Berlin Premier Lieutenant Alexander Weichberger and his wife Amalie Henriette Florentine Frierike Charlotte , nee. Düttel , born. In 1848 the family moved from Krauthausen to Eisenach , where Weichberger was confirmed in 1857.

Life

Weichberger attended the Dresden Polytechnic from 1860 to 1861 . Since architectural studies seemed to resist his inclinations, he left after just one semester and turned to Weimar , where he was accepted into the Grand Ducal Art School, the so-called " Weimar School of Painting ". His teachers were Arnold Böcklin and Franz von Lenbach until 1862 , Alexander Michelis from 1862 to 1868 and finally Max Schmidt . His studies were interrupted by study visits to Italy and the Baltic Sea.

Weichberger learned to sketch nature with a brush and paint. He mainly painted motifs from the Thuringian Forest , Rügen and Tyrol and became famous for his forest landscapes .

The art collections of the Klassik Stiftung Weimar have several works by Weichberger, including some paintings, drawings and a sketchbook.

On January 25, 1876, Weichberger married Elise Choinanus, who was twelve years his junior . The first of four children was born in 1877: Konrad Weichberger , who later became a writer. He was followed in 1880 by Susanne , who later became an artist, in 1881 by Hans and in 1885 by Alexander , who had been dependent on a wheelchair since he was 16 years old.

Weichberger worked for the Etching Association in Weimar from 1877 to 1906 and is represented in its portfolio with a total of 29 prints. He lived as a freelance artist and gave occasional lessons in drawing school. In 1899 he was appointed professor.

He died of a heart attack on August 19, 1913 at the age of 70.
