Edward Gordon Douglas-Pennant, 1st Baron Penrhyn (born June 20, 1800 in York , † March 31, 1886 ) was a British nobleman and politician .

Life

He came from a branch line of the Clan Douglas and was a younger son of the Hon. John Douglas (1756-1818) and the Lady Frances Lascelles. His father was a son of James Douglas, 14th Earl of Morton , his mother a daughter of Edward Lascelles, 1st Earl of Harewood . His birth name was Edward Gordon Douglas .

He joined the British Army in 1815 . He served there first in the Grenadier Guards , where he was promoted to captain in 1824 , to lieutenant colonel in 1834 and to colonel in 1846 .

After his older brother George Douglas inherited the title of 17th Earl of Morton in 1827 , he received a certificate dated August 26, 1835, the protocol status of the son of an earl and thus the courtesy address "the Honorable".

On August 6, 1833, he married Juliana Isabella Mary Dawkins-Pennant, one of the two heirloom daughters of George Dawkins-Pennant (1764-1840). His father-in-law was the great-nephew of Richard Pennant, 1st Baron Penrhyn, and had inherited his fortunes in 1808, including Penrhyn Castle and extensive slate quarries in Wales . After Douglas inherited his father-in-law in 1840, he changed his family name to Douglas-Pennant under a royal license from January 25, 1841 .

After his first wife died in 1842, he married on January 26, 1846 in second marriage Lady Maria Louisa FitzRoy (1818-1912), daughter of Henry FitzRoy, 5th Duke of Grafton .

From 1841 he was a Member of the House of Commons for Caernarvonshire and from 1866 also held the office of Lord Lieutenant of Caernarvonshire . On August 3, 1866, he was made Baron Penrhyn , of Llandegai in the County of Carnavon. As a result, he left the House of Commons and became a member of the House of Lords .
