Edward Harrison Compton
Edward Harrison Compton (born October 11, 1881 in Feldafing on Lake Starnberg ( Upper Bavaria ), † March 6, 1960 ibid) was a German landscape painter of English descent.
Life
Edward Harrison Compton received his education from his father Edward Theodore Compton and attended the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London. He then returned to Bavaria and toured Tyrol , Northern Italy , Germany and England . As his father was enthusiastic about the alpine world , he initially followed its artistic model as a painter of high mountain representations. As a result of polio , which he suffered at the age of 28, he had to look for his motifs for paintings and watercolors with depictions of architecture and landscapes in easily accessible areas of the Bavarian and northern Italian foothills ( Berchtesgadener Land , Trient , Lake Garda ).
Light and shadow techniques, the sunny view through the beech forests, autumn moods on the border between water and forest and general morning and evening moods formed his preferred motifs. Picturesque cityscapes also show the artist's diversity.
Compton recorded his motifs in drawings , watercolors and oil paintings . He lived temporarily in Potsdam and in Würzburg , but returned to his homeland in Upper Bavaria. His siblings, the flower and still life painter Marion Compton and the flower painter Dora Keel-Compton , were also artistically active .
In 1907 a series of his works was exhibited for the first time in the Münchner Kunstverein (from the Karwendel and Gardasee, Kaisergebirge, “Geisterschmiede bei Kufstein” and many others). Further exhibitions followed, including at the Royal Academy in London, Bradford and Berlin.
