Sir Edward Emile Tomkins , GCMG , CVO (born November 16, 1915 in Jabalpur , British India ; † September 20, 2007 in Sibbertoft, Daventry District , Northamptonshire , England ) was a British diplomat who was ambassador to the Netherlands and from 1972 to 1975 Ambassador to France .

Life

Edward Emile Tomkins, son of Lt. Col. EL Tomkins, completed after the visit of Ampleforth College to study at Trinity College of the University of Cambridge . After its completion in 1939, he joined the diplomatic service (HM Diplomatic Service) Ministry of Foreign Affairs ( Foreign Office ) and found in the subsequent period numerous uses of representations abroad and in the foreign ministry. In 1954 he became counselor for public relations at the embassy in France and remained in this post until 1959. In 1957 he was honored as Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (CVO) for his services . Subsequently, he was from 1959 to 1962 Head of Division Western Europe (Western Department) and was also during this time in 1960 Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG). From 1962 to 1963 he was head of the Central Department , which at that time also included the tasks of the Central Department .

Tomkins had owned Winslow Hall since 1959 , which was designed by Christopher Wren in 1700 .

In 1963 Tomkins moved to the Embassy in the Federal Republic of Germany as envoy and worked there until 1967. He then served as envoy to the US embassy between 1967 and 1969 . In 1969 he was promoted to Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George (KCMG) and has since had the addition of Sir . In 1970 he replaced Sir Peter Garran as ambassador to the Netherlands and remained in this position until 1972, when Sir John Barnes succeeded him. Most recently in 1972 he succeeded Sir Christopher Soames as Ambassador to France and held this post until he retired in 1975. He was then succeeded by Sir Nicholas Henderson . In 1975 he was raised to the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St Michael and St George (GCMG). In 1977 he was representing the Conservative Party member of the Council of the County of Buckinghamshire , the Buckinghamshire County Council , elected and was one of these until the 1985th In 1984 he was also honored with the Grand Cross of the French Legion of Honor .

In 1955 Edward Tomkins married Gillian Benson, who died in 2003, a daughter of Air Commodore Constantine Evelyn Benson and Lady Morvyth Lillian Ward, whose father was William Ward, 2nd Earl of Dudley . From this marriage a son and two daughters were born. Tomkins had owned Winslow Hall since 1959 , which was designed by Christopher Wren in 1700 .
