EC Tubb

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Edwin Charles Tubb (born on 15. October 1919 in London , died on 10. September 2010 ) was a British science fiction - author . He wrote - also using numerous pseudonyms - over 130 novels and 230 short stories. His best-known work is the novel cycle about the mercenary Earl Dumarest , who experiences adventures on strange planets in search of his homeland Terra . In addition to science fiction, Tubb also wrote horror and western novels .

Life

Edwin Charles Tubb was the son of the engineer Edwin Margrie Tubb and the fashion designer Marie Francois, née Bonzec. In his early years he worked as a social worker, in grocery and as a salesman for printing machines . In 1944 he married Iris Kathleen Smith, with whom he had two daughters.

Even as a child, Tubb was enthusiastic about science fiction. Tubbs' first stories appeared from 1951 in the SF magazines New Worlds , Science Fantasy and Authentic Science Fiction , of which he was editor from 1956 until it was discontinued in 1957. Tubb's first novels appeared under the pseudonym: Saturn Patrol (1951, as King Lang), Planetfall (1951, as Gill Hunt), Argentis (1952, as Brian Shaw) and Alien Universe (1952, as Volsted Gridban). In the years that followed, Tubb established himself as a productive, competent, and experienced writer who usually attached more weight to plot and tension than to any details of technical-scientific concepts.

In 1967, The Winds of Garth was the first volume in his cycle about the mercenary and space vagrant Earl Dumarest, of which 31 volumes had appeared up to 1985, without Dumarest's search for his homeland Terra having come to an end. Another band, The Return , brought this conclusion and in 2008 another sequel to the saga followed. Other series Tubbs are Cap Kennedy , German as Commander Scott , as well as some tie-ins to the British SF television series Mondbasis Alpha 1 . Tubb remained productive until the mid-1980s and a few westerns appeared under his own name and pseudonym in addition to SF novels. After that he wrote comparatively little, initially due to the deteriorating market conditions for science fiction, and finally because his health was deteriorating.

His more well-known pseudonyms include individual pseudonyms Charles Gray, Gregory Kern and Carl Maddox, as well as the publishing pseudonyms Volsted Gridban, Gill Hunt, King Lang, Arthur Maclean, Brian Shaw and Roy Sheldon.

His short stories have appeared in a dozen or so collections. The first two were Ten from Tomorrow (1966, German as Projekt Ming-Vase ), and A Scatter of Stardust (1972, German as a handful of star dust ). Another German collection with 5 short stories is Probation in Space and Other Stories (1966). Tubb was so popular in Germany that the Moewig publishing house even dedicated the series of EC Tubb paperbacks to it in the mid-1980s , which amounted to 28 volumes.

From the late 1940s, Tubb was an active member of the British SF fandom . In the mid-1950s he was one of the editors of the fanzines Eye and Plonge . He was a member of the British Science Fictions Association , the Science Fantasy Society and in 1958 a co-founder of their successor, the British Science Fiction Association (BSFA). In his first year he was editor of Vector , the magazine of the BSFA. In 1959 he was honored as the Knight of St. Fantony .

At Eastercon 6 (Cytricon) 1955 he was named the best British SF author. He was guest of honor at Eastercon 15 (RePetercon) in 1964 and guest of honor at Worldcon in Heidelberg (Heicon) in 1970. In 1972 he received the European Science Fiction Society Award for his novel Lucifer at the first Eurocon in Trieste . In 2010 he was awarded the Premio Italia for I posseduti , the translation of his novel Touch of Evil . In the same year, Tubb died at the age of 90. Most recently, he had worked on the revision of his novels To Dream Again and Fires of Satan , which appeared posthumously in 2011 and 2012, respectively.
