Edwin Josef Oberhauser (born June 22, 1926 in Dornbirn ; † November 17, 2019 in Feldkirch ) was an Austrian conservationist , author and honorary president of the Vorarlberger Landesmuseumsverein .

Life

Oberhauser was born as the son of a businessman on Marktstrasse in Dornbirn. After attending elementary school in Dornbirn, he was a student at the private high school in Bischofshofen in Salzburg from 1937 . At the end of 1944 he joined the Reich Labor Service in Saalfelden and worked there as a courier . After the end of the war, he graduated from the secondary school in Dornbirn in 1947 .

He then went on to study at the University of Innsbruck , where he received his doctorate in 1952. jur. PhD. In the course of his studies, he graduated from the akad in 1948 . Association Austria Innsbruck joined. The judicial practice was completed at the courts in Innsbruck , followed by legal practice until joining Grazer Wechselseiten Versicherung in 1954. Training at GRAWE in Innsbruck and Graz up to the establishment of a separate regional directorate in Vorarlberg in 1969. This was also the appointment of regional director . He held this position until he retired in 1984.

Since 1972 Oberhauser was a founding member of the Lions Club Montfort in Feldkirch . In the Lions movement he held leading positions (president, zone chairman, vice governor, chairman of the commission for international cooperation in the Lake Constance region ).

Since 1971 he has been a member of the Vorarlberger Landesmuseumsverein and was active in several specialist committees during this membership. In 1985 there was a unanimous election as club president.

Since 1990 he has been a member of an interest group for the renovation of the Jonas Castle in Götzis. In the course of the renovation, the Vorarlberger Landesmuseumsverein supported a number of projects which Oberhauser delegated in close cooperation with the Austrian Federal Monuments Office and the Götzis community . In addition to donations from the association's budget, Oberhauser also invested private funds in the renovation, thus making it possible to preserve the sundial , correctly attach the restoration date and the characteristic round arch at the foot of the tower.

He was married until the death of his wife Hildegard (née Steurer) and had two children. He lived in Götzis in Vorarlberg.

Until the late 2010s, Oberhauser worked as an antique collector and participated in various local history projects.

Activities as president of the Vorarlberger Landesmuseumsverein

During his club presidency, he worked closely with a wide variety of culturally active associations in Vorarlberg . The financial renovation and then the significant promotion of cultural issues, support for the preservation of monuments and the acquisition of important Vorarlberg antiquarians also fall within this period. During the presidency around 1.9 million schillings were used to support, promote and secure a wide range of cultural assets. In addition, over 500 meetings, events, cultural trips etc. were initiated and were responsible for during this time. Membership reached a peak of over 1200 members during his acquisition activity. During this time he worked with the directors of the Vorarlberg Museum , including Tobias Natter .

During this time, through the initiative of Oberhauser, outstanding museum pieces were acquired and given to the relevant museums, especially the Vorarlberg Museum . Among other things, the most important coin find in the Schlösschen Sonderberg in Götzis , which was ever made in Vorarlberg , was acquired. This coin find was given to the Vorarlberg Museum and the state of Vorarlberg on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the Vorarlberg State Museum Association in 2007 . As part of this 150th anniversary celebration, Dr. Oberhauser, after managing the fortunes of this association for 22 years, handed over the financially well-positioned and, with over 1200 members, largest cultural association in Vorarlberg to his successor, Thomas Klagian.

In addition, various projects such as the publication of the Vorarlberg field name books were brought into being through the initiative of Oberhauser. Particularly in the area of ​​castle restoration, a large number of buildings worthy of preservation in Vorarlberg could be preserved and their restoration financed through the close cooperation with the local researcher Franz Josef Huber .
