Vorarlberg field name book
The Vorarlberger Flurnamenbuch is an extensive collection of all the names of places, mountains, paths, terrain and bodies of water documented in Vorarlberg, with linguistic evidence, phonetic transcription, cartographic documentation and documentary records. The work was compiled and edited by Werner Vogt .
Origin of name
The Vorarlberg Book of Field Names derived the title from the largely historically existed for centuries in these geographical boundaries region Vorarlberg and refers to tangible issue on the occurring here Flurnamen ( Ried name ). The field name (field name , parcel , parcel ) usually designates the name of a small-scale part of the landscape (hall), in which there are no or only isolated houses, and is used for localization and identification.
Development of the recording of field names in Vorarlberg
The first local history publications were incomplete collections limited to individual regions of the country. Until the middle of the 20th century, these were mostly carried out from private initiatives.
On the initiative of the Vorarlberg State Museum Association, a comprehensive collection with a contemporary toponomy was commissioned and created as a three-part compendium on Vorarlberg field name research. The second part, listing in lexical order and etymological interpretation of the name treasure trove, and part 3, evaluating the material with regard to linguistic, settlement and general cultural-historical interpretations are still awaiting publication.
Origin, age and development of field names
In the Vorarlberg field name book, several field names had to be included for the same parcel in some cases due to the different settlements by different tribes (e.g. Raetians , Alemanni , Walser ) and in different centuries. In Vorarlberg, as in other regions, many historical and linguistic developments as well as the differently designated topographical conditions are reflected in the field names.
In Vorarlberg, too, the field names or location names have mostly been handed down over centuries; some can be traced back to prehistory and early history in their language roots (for river names or names of prominent mountains).
Around 46,700 field names have been recorded in Vorarlberg, of which around 1/3 are not derived from the German language .
Creation of the Vorarlberg field name book
The Vorarlberg field name book is based on older historical sources and oral traditions. The field names recorded in the Vorarlberg field name book are, as in most other German-speaking countries,
- traditional location or usage names (e.g. Augstenberg or Rauz ) or
- have references to former owners (e.g. Winsau or Jennen etc.).
Structure of the Vorarlberg field name book
The Vorarlberger Flurnamenbuch was published by the Vorarlberger Landesmuseumsverband and appeared in 9 volumes from 1970 to 1993. It is the first part of the complete publication:
- Band (1970)… Nüziders / Bludenz / Klostertal
- Band (1973)… Montafon
- Volume (1977) ... Walgau
- Band (1971)… Großwalsertal / Damüls
- Band (1991) ... Vorderland
- Volume (1993)… Unterland / Leiblachtal
- Volume (1987) ... Vorderwald
- Band (1984)… Hinterwald
- Band (1980)… Tannberg / Kleinwalsertal
The nine volumes of the first part contain 38,554 names, alphabetically listed for each of the 98 municipalities in the country, a semi-phonetic description of their recent dialectic sound and around 45,000 documented occupancy notes of the name property as well as 92 maps made by the author to document the topographical situation.
The second part with the listing in lexical order as well as etymological interpretation of the name treasure and the third part with the evaluation of the material with regard to linguistic, settlement and general cultural historical interpretations have not yet been published.
Minor blurring should be corrected when the outstanding second part of the work is finally published.
VOGIS
The field names from the Vorarlberg field name book were included in the Vorarlberg Geographical Information System (VOGIS).
Current use of field names
Settlement and street names in new development areas of the cities and communities in Vorarlberg are still based on the historical field names (e.g. Bremenmahd in Dornbirn ). The Vorarlberg field name book provides the scientific basis for the naming.
UNESCO
On March 16, 2011, the Vorarlberg field name book was included in the national directory of the Austrian Commission for UNESCO for the intangible cultural heritage of the republic.
