Eerik Aps

Eerik Aps (born October 22, 1987 ) is an Estonian wrestler .

Career

Eerik Aps started wrestling at the age of seven. He prefers the Greco-Roman style. Aps is a member of the "Nelson" Tallinn sports club and was or is trained by Igor Annus and Henn Põlluste. He has been one of the best Estonian young wrestlers in the junior division since 1998, and this year he took third place at the Estonian school championships.

In the years from 2001 to 2007 he won a total of eight Estonian junior championships in the respective age groups and in different weight classes. In 2007 and 2008 he was also Estonian senior welterweight champion.

Since 2003 Eerik Aps has also regularly participated in international junior championships. The best result he achieved was a 5th place at the Junior World Championships 2006 in Guatemala City , where he finished an excellent 5th place in the welterweight division with two wins and two losses.

In 2007 he started at a senior world championship for the first time. But he lost in Baku in his first fight against the Finnish ex-world champion and veteran Markku Yli-Hannuksela , with which he was eliminated and only placed in 40th place. He did much better at the European Seniors Championships in Tampere in 2008 . He defeated there in the welterweight division Ionel Puscas from Romania a . Aljaksandr Kikinjou from Belarus , but failed in the quarter-finals to Julian Kwit from Poland and finished in 7th place. Eerik Aps failed to qualify for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing in two qualifying tournaments.

In 2009 Eerik Aps moved to the middleweight division. At the European Championships this year in Vilnius he achieved the most valuable result of his career so far with a 5th place in this weight class. On the way to this success he was defeated by the Russian ex-world champion Alexei Mishin just on points, but defeated the silver medalist from Beijing middleweight the Hungarian Zoltán Fodor on points. In the battle for the bronze medal he was defeated by the Ukrainian Vitaly Lishchinsky on points.
