Eflani is a Turkish city and a district in the Karabük Province . The 674 km² large district is located in the northeast of the province and borders on Kastamonu and Bartın . The city of Eflani itself is located on a plateau 46 km northeast of the provincial capital Karabük and about 100 km from the Black Sea . The city has 2,168 and the district 9,088 inhabitants. The city is divided into six Mahalle (districts).
Eflani is located in the ancient region of Paphlagonia and was probably founded by King Nicomedes II of Bithynia as a base for the Amasra colony . The region came under Greek, Roman and Byzantine rule over time. After the Turkish occupation in the 11th century, Eflani came under Seljuk influence. A Seljuk general founded the Candar principality in the region . Eflani was the capital of the Candar from 1292 to 1309. In 1461 the principality fell to the Ottomans and remained so until the fall of the Ottomans. It has been part of the Republic of Turkey since 1923 .
Initially, Eflani was a Bucak from Safranbolu County in Kastamonu Province. In 1927 Safranbolu was attached to Zonguldak . Eflani was raised to the rank of county in 1953. In 1995 the province of Karabük was founded. In Eflani there are 54 villages and apart from the city of Eflani there is no other municipality (tr: Belediye ).
