The Egg is a mountain range in Switzerland that lies in the Zürcher Unterland .

geography

The approximately six kilometer long ridge separates the Wehntal from the Bachsertal . It is bounded to the east by the Heitlig - a small pass that connects the two valleys. To the north, the Egg borders the mountain (height 603  m above sea level ) above Fisibach and the Butal , which drains towards Siglistorf . In the northwest lies the Schüliberg (height 596  m above sea level ), which is sometimes considered to be part of the Egg. To the west, the Egg is bounded by an approximately two-kilometer long side valley of the Surbtal , in which the Schneisingen settlement is located. The entire ridge is covered by the Eggwald , which is the largest contiguous forest area in the canton of Zurich.

The upper part of the Egg is flattened like a plateau. The areas in this area are referred to as slabs , which are mostly named after the communities in the Wehntal. From east to west there is the Schöfflisdorfer Platte , the Alte Platte on the municipality border to Oberweningen , the Oberweniger Platte , the Schleiniker Platte and the Niederweninger Platte - the names are still in use locally and are also in the Siegfried map listed. From the 1950s onwards, strange-looking names appear in the sheets of national maps for bars : the Schleiniker record became the Schliniker record in plural while the names for the other records disappeared entirely. For this purpose, the name In der Platten was introduced near Kote 671 , the highest point of the Egg.

From a geological point of view, the Egg is a gravel terrace from the early Pleistocene , which probably consists of medium moraine material .
