Schneisingen ( Swiss German : ˈʃnæisigə ) is a municipality in the Swiss canton of Aargau . It belongs to the Zurzach district and lies on the border with the canton of Zurich and around five kilometers south of the border with Germany .

geography

The community lies in a two-kilometer-long side valley of the Surb , which is surrounded by ice-age gravel terraces .

Schneisingen consists of several districts that have grown together loosely and give the community the character of a scattered settlement. From the south-eastern corner of the municipality in a north-west direction, these are Hüniken ( 445  m above sea level ), Unterschneisingen ( 460  m above sea level ), Mittelschneisingen ( 493  m above sea level ) and Oberschneisingen ( 531  m above sea level ). . The hamlet of Widen ( 475  m above sea level ), which is about one kilometer from Oberschneisingen, directly on the municipal border with Lengnau, is not connected to these districts .

The terrain west of the side valley consists of the gentle slope of the Egg ( 600  m above sea level ) between Oberschneisingen and Widen. This is followed by the extensive Bowald plateau, which reaches a height of 607 meters. In the far north, Schneisingen has a small portion of the Chrüzlibach valley, which flows into the Upper Rhine near Rekingen . The terrain east of the side valley is much steeper and rises to the 596 meter high Schüliberg, which also has a plateau.

The area of the municipality is 826 hectares , of which 348 hectares are forested and 85 hectares are built over. The highest point is at 611 meters at the Schüliberg in the Platten area, the lowest at 440 meters at the Surb. Neighboring communities are Wislikofen and Siglistorf in the north, Niederweningen in the east, Ehrendingen in the south, Lengnau in the west and Böbikon in the northwest.

history

Findings indicate that the area was already settled during Roman times. Sneisanch was first mentioned in a document in 1113. The place name comes from the Old High German Sneisunwang and means "slope by the aisle". At that time, the nobles von Waldhausen donated the Wislikofen priory and donated extensive land in the region to the St. Blasien monastery for this purpose. After the barons of Regensberg and later the diocese of Constance exercised lower jurisdiction for a few decades , this finally also came to the monastery. The blood jurisdiction and sovereignty were initially in the counts of Kyburg , from 1273 at the Habsburgs .

The confederates conquered Aargau in 1415 and Schneisingen belonged to the office of Ehrendingen of the county of Baden , a common rule . In 1681, the monastery pledged the lower jurisdiction to the Schnorf family from Baden , who had a representative house built and provided all of the subordinates until 1798. Four major fires in 1771, 1773, 1780 and 1785 caused considerable property damage. In March 1798 the French took Switzerland and proclaimed the Helvetic Republic . Schneisingen was initially a municipality in the short-lived canton of Baden , since 1803 it has belonged to the canton of Aargau.

An alpine rose garden has been located in the Bowald north of Oberschneisingen since the Helvetic era, which is unique in the Table Jura . According to legend, the seeds were brought here by refugees from Nidwalden when they fled Napoleon's troops. The Alpine Rose Garden has been a nature reserve since 1874 . Even today Schneisingen is often referred to as the "Alpine Rose Village".

In 1891 Schneisingen was connected to the railway network when the Wehntalbahn from Dielsdorf to Niederweningen was opened; the train station is exactly on the municipal boundary. The further construction as the Surbtalbahn through the Surbtal to Döttingen never came about and had to be finally put on record in 1937. The industrialization of the late 19th century stopped the population decline. Part of the Niederweningen machine factory in Bucher was built next to the station. Since 1970 alone, the population has increased by more than two thirds.

Every year the Alpine Rose Festival is celebrated in Schneisingen between the end of May and mid-June. The legend of the alpine roses comes back to life a bit. This takes place around the nature reserve of the alpine roses. It is organized by the Schneisingen Music Society.

coat of arms

The blazon of the municipal coat of arms reads: "In blue above a high green three mountain, two six-pointed yellow stars." The coat of arms was first depicted on the municipal seal in 1872. With green and blue, two dark colors predominate, which neutralize each other. In 2002, the cantonal coat of arms commission suggested that the three mountains should be colored yellow or white in accordance with the heraldic color rules , which the local council refused.
