The Eggwald is a 16 km² forest area in the cantons of Zurich and Aargau . It is the largest contiguous forest area in the canton of Zurich.

The forest lies on the Egg ridge between the Wehntal and Bachsertal in the Zurich district of Dielsdorf and in the Aargau district of Zurzach . The Zurich communities Steinmaur , Schöfflisdorf , Oberweningen , Schleinikon , Niederweningen and Bachs , as well as the Aargau communities Fisibach , Rümikon , Wislikofen , Siglistorf and Schneisingen have a share in the forest area. The easternmost point of the roughly triangular area is at the Heitlig , a small pass that connects the Wehntal with the Bachsertal. The western border is formed by the Niederweningen – Siglistorf – Fisibach road connection, which leads over the Siglistorfer and Belchen passes; only on the Belchen are small parts to the west of the road in the municipality of Rümikon. The non-forested Butal extends from Siglistorf in a south-easterly direction into the forest area, at the end of the Butal lies the Wattwil outer guard, which belongs to the municipality of Oberweningen. Further above the western flank of the Bachsertal is a clearing with the settlements of Waldhausen and Rüebisberg, both of which belong to the municipality of Bachs.

During the Second World War , the Eggwald was the scene of the last military execution in Switzerland.

The Eggwald is used for wood production. The area of ​​the communities Steinmaur and Bachs is managed by the Zweckverband Forstrevier Egg-Ost - Stadlerberg , that of Schöfflisdorf and Oberweningen by the Oberes Wehntal forestry , that of Schleinikon and Niederweningen by the Wehntal forest . In Aargau, the forest in the communities of Schneisingen and Siglistorf is managed by the Studenland forestry company , while the part of Fisibach, Rümikon and Wislikofen is managed by the Kaiserstuhl forestry company .

In addition to wood production, forest management also serves nature conservation. This promotes the old oak stocks, which are important for the survival of the endangered middle woodpecker . Deer , wild boars , foxes and badgers live in the forest and are also hunted. The communities in the Wehntal run hunting lodges on the Egg, which mostly also serve as bases for forestry operations. Public fire pits can be found near the hunting lodges . The Eggwald is used by many hikers, riders and bikers as a local recreation area.

  • Mulflenflue - a rock head with a view to the north
  • Silberbrünneli - a legendary place with a small resting place
  • Crevice Flue - a rock drop with twenty to thirty meter high cliffs
  • Hitlerplatz - memorial stone for the last military execution in Switzerland
