Location and surroundings

The place is located on the upper reaches of the Pfaffenbach at the foot of the potter about halfway between Zittau and the climatic health resort Lückendorf on the old trade route Gabler Straße , the formerly important connection between Zittau and Deutsch Gabel in Bohemia (today here: Lückendorfer Straße ). The Hartauer Pfaffenbach flows on the southern outskirts of the village .

history

Eichgraben was first mentioned in a document in 1582. Other forms of name were Eichgrund and Eichgrube . After the plague in 1599 had killed more than 8000 people in Zittau and the surrounding area, residents from more densely populated places settled on the connecting path (today: Olbersdorfer Straße ) between Mittelweg and Gabler Straße . The town grew to more than 100 inhabitants in the 18th century, also due to the influx of people from Bohemia. Today Eichgraben has a good 700 inhabitants again after a temporary population decline at the end of the last century.

politics

Sven Ehrig is the current local mayor.

The partner municipality is the market town of Eichgraben / Lower Austria.

Protected areas

To the north-east of the Eichgraben location is the FFH area Eichgraben wetland .
