Squirrel Bridge

A squirrel bridge is a construction that - similar to a green bridge - is intended to enable small animals, especially squirrels , but also martens and other small animals, to safely cross busy roads. In Germany there are so far (as of 2014) two rope bridges that are stretched between trees. The Nutty Narrows Bridge in the USA from 1963, which was constructed somewhat more elaborately than a suspension bridge , is considered the first of its kind.

These bridges are a measure for species protection and the cohesion of natural habitats, which serve both animal protection and accident prevention.

The costs vary significantly, depending on the construction: While simple rope constructions, e.g. B. the one in Brecht , Belgium , costs from around 250 euros , the bridge built in The Hague in 2013 is likely to be one of the most expensive squirrel bridges at around 150,000–200,000 euros (other sources: 20,000 euros) and a half year construction period. According to press reports, the latter is apparently ignored by the squirrels.

An alternative to bridges (but of course not for squirrels) are underpasses - amphibious tunnels - under the roadway.

List of squirrel bridges

Depending on the continent, the bridges named below serve to protect the European squirrel or the gray squirrel native to North America , which in turn is hunted in Europe as the neozoon that displaces the native squirrel species .
