The population development in historical times is documented for Eickhorst independently of the community of Vordorf. Since the incorporation and the establishment of the joint municipality in 1974, the population development for the place Eickhorst has been documented by the joint municipality Papenteich . As of December 31, 2006 Eickhorst had 477 inhabitants.

Eickhorst experienced a strong increase in the number of inhabitants, like almost all places in the municipality, as a result of the Second World War due to refugees and displaced persons who settled in the village.

The last strong boost came in the 1990s. The designation of new building areas led to suburbanization . This was favored by the location only a short distance from Braunschweig, Wolfsburg and the close connection to Autobahn 2 . According to model calculations, the population of Eickhorst, like that of the entire Papenteich, will continue to grow in the coming decades due to these factors.

language

See main article: Language in the Samtgemeinde Papenteich
Eickhorst belongs to the High German- speaking area. Until the Second World War, a mixture of Brunswick and Papenteich dialect was still spoken. With the introduction of Standard German as the school language, this dialect was almost completely displaced.

history

The first written mention of Eickhorst is for the year 1007 under the name "Hechorst". In the Steterburg Annals of January 24, 1007 , King Heinrich II (HRR) took the Steterburg ( Thiede ) monastery with all its possessions under his protection. Eickhorst is one of the towns listed. On the occasion of the millennial existence of Eickhorst, a boulder with the inscription "1000 years Eickhorst - 1007 - 2007" was placed in the center of the village .

On March 1, 1974, Eickhorst was incorporated into the community of Vordorf.
