description

inflorescence

The real Austria mullein is a perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of around 50 to 80, sometimes up to 100 centimeters. The basal leaf blades have a clearly wedge-shaped base and have rounded serrated teeth. The leaf surfaces are hairy and green on the underside.

The flowering period extends from July to October. The branched, racemose total inflorescence is composed of several annual partial inflorescences . The flowers have a diameter of 15 to 22 mm. The yellow petals and the stamens are covered with purple-violet glandular hairs ( trichomes ).

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 26.

Hybrids between the heather mullein and the dark mullein are externally similar to the actual Austrian mullein.

Occurrence

The real Austria mullein occurs in Europe in Switzerland , in east- central , south-east and eastern Europe .

In Austria, this calcareous species can be found in patchy, stony dry grassland , on oak forest fringes and generally in dry, warm locations of the colline to submontane altitude . It occurs frequently in the Pannonian region , otherwise it is scattered and the less frequently it occurs the further west you go. The occurrences extend to the federal states of Burgenland , Vienna , Lower Austria , Upper Austria , Styria , Carinthia , Salzburg and East Tyrol .

The real Austria mullein and the dark mullein are vicarious ecogeographically , which means in a certain area either (almost exclusively) one or the other species occurs. While the Austrian mullein occurs mainly in dry and warm locations, it is largely replaced by the dark mullein in cool, humid areas.
