Eilif Samuelsen

Torben Eilif Lindenskov Samuelsen (born May 22, 1934 in Fuglafjørður ) is a former Faroese teacher and politician. He was a member of the Sambandsflokkurin in Løgting and between 1980 and 1998 a minister in three Faroese state governments .

Life

education and profession

Eilif Samuelsen studied from 1952 to 1958 in Haslev in Denmark at the local university and at the teachers' seminar. He then taught as a teacher from 1958 to 1959 in his hometown of Fuglafjørður , from 1959 to 1965 in Hvalvík and from 1965 to 1968 at the Tórshavner community school. However, he spent the longest time at the training school for teachers ( Venjingarskúlin ) in Tórshavn, where he worked for over 30 years from the year it was founded in 1968 to 2002. At the same time, he headed the Faroese Teachers' Association ( Føroya Lærarafelag ) from 1968 to 1980 and was chairman of the board of the Tórshavner Music School from 1988 to 1998. After retiring in 1999, he worked at the practice school for three more years and then began translating books.

From 1978 to 1990 he was a member of the Sambandsflokkurin in the Faroese parliament (Løgting). Between 1980 and 1998 he was a member of several Faroese governments. As Minister ( Landsstýrismaður ) for Education, Social Affairs and Energy from 1981 to 1985 in the state government Pauli Ellefsen , Minister for Environment, Energy, Education, Local and Nordic Affairs from 1994 to 1996 in the state government Edmund Joensen I and Minister for Environment, Energy, Education and local affairs from 1996 to 1998 in the Edmund Joensen II state government . Eilif Samuelsen's parents are Rachel Malena nee. Midjord and Steingrím Samuelsen from Fuglafjørður. Steingrím Samuelsen (1903–1951) is the eldest son of Andrass Samuelsen , the first Prime Minister ( Løgmaður ) of the Faroe Islands. The Løgtings MP Trygvi Samuelsen (1907–1985) and the journalist Georg L. Samuelsen (1910–1997) are younger brothers of Eilif's father. Eilif himself is the fourth of 12 siblings. Faroese guitarist, singer and composer Stanley Samuelsen is his youngest brother. Eilif is married to Katrin Maria geb. Hansen from Saksun . He lives in Tórshavn with his wife.

Others

Eilif Samuelsen has translated numerous books into Faroese, including many ideological works (philosophy, theology) by ancient authors such as Augustine , Plato and Aristotle and medieval authors such as Thomas Aquinas , as well as books by modern writers such as " Fathers and Sons " by Ivan Turgenev .

For this translation work, he was awarded the Faroese Literature Prize for a special cultural achievement in autumn 2016 .
