A man strikes back (original title: Il cittadino si ribella ) is an Italian crime film from 1974. Enzo G. Castellari directed Franco Nero in the lead role. The film ran on June 27, 1975 in cinemas in German-speaking countries.

action

During a bank robbery, engineer Antonelli is taken hostage by three gangsters, badly mistreated and left injured. Since the police powerlessly shrugs their shoulders, he searches for those responsible on his own. He uses the petty criminal Tommy, whom he blackmailed with photos, in order to get weapons and contact with the underworld by means of a fictitious coup. In fact, he manages to track down the three criminals; however, the police summoned to find their hiding place abandoned. Apparently they were warned from among the police. With the help of Tommy, who is now friends, Antonelli fakes his own kidnapping in order to force the police to intervene. Antonelli and Tommy roam the known places of the underworld and meet again the gangsters who attempt an assassination attempt. The confrontation takes place in an abandoned warehouse in which the three criminals, but also Tommy, lose their lives. In order to deter others from vigilante justice, the success of closing the case is attributed in a statement to the police.

criticism

Michael Cholewa emphasizes in his genre overview that this film deviates "a lot from the usual Castellari tears" and relies on "a fragile, introverted character" as the protagonist. All characters and actions are the "result of a brutal and decivilized society". The lexicon of international film did not differentiate and judged it to be “a brutal and questionable vigilante film”. “MC” was also not enthusiastic, who wrote that the film told its events tiredly and mixed short, intense action and violence scenes with boring stereotypical scenes.

Remarks

The German-language video publication under the title A citizen defends himself was considerably shortened with a running time of 73 minutes.

Movie songs are Dune Buggy (sung by the De Angelis brothers as "Oliver Onions"), Good-bye My Friend and Drivin 'All Around (both by Susi and Guy , that is "Susan Duncan-Smith" and "Cesare De Natale" ). The soundtrack was released on CD GDM CLUB 7007.

The film was shot in Genoa; the gross profit in Italy was 408 million lire .
