A Summer with Coo (Original title: Kappa no Ku to Natsuyasumi ) is a Japanese cartoon from 2007 directed by Keiichi Hara , who also wrote the screenplay.

action

Japan during the Edo period : a small kappa (water goblin) lives with his father in the Dragon God Swamp , which has been their home since ancient times. A corrupt state official and samurai now wants to drain the swamp in order to earn money with rice fields. The kappa father asks the samurai to reconsider his plan, otherwise the kappas will have no place to live. The samurai gets angry and cuts off one arm of the kappa and then kills him with his samurai sword . The Kappa son has observed this and is now threatened by the samurai himself. Suddenly an earthquake begins and the little Kappa falls into a crevice and is buried in it.

Hundreds of years later in what is now Tokyo : The young Koichi finds an egg-shaped stone on the bank of the Kurome River. When he throws it against a wall, it breaks in two and you can see a petrified being in it. Koichi takes the stone home. When he washes him in the water, the petrified creature comes to life and turns out to be little Kappa. Koichi gives the kappa the name Coo because it makes noises that sound like the name.

After father Yasuo and mother Yukari find out about this, they allow their son to record the kappa in the apartment. Only Koichi's little sister Hitomi dislikes the new family member. Alter, the family dog, also befriends Coo and shows him how to communicate with one another with the voice in your head without moving your mouth. When the family hears that there should be kappas in Tōno , Koichi and Coo set off on the train there. In an inn, Coo meets a house ghost in the form of a little girl ( Zashiki Warashi ), who tells him that he has not seen a kappa for a hundred years. Coo now wants to go home, but Koichi takes him to Kamaishi and shows him the sea there.

When they arrive back in Tokyo, Koichi is intercepted by two reporters who hold him against his will, open his backpack and take photos of the Kappa. The next day the photos are published in a magazine. After a long hesitation, the family is ready to introduce the secret kappa to the public. Coo accepts an appearance on a television show. There he meets a descendant of the samurai, who presents the severed arm of the kappa father as a trophy. Coo takes his father's arm and escapes from the studio with the support of the dog. While on the run, the dog is hit by a car and dies. Coo climbs the Tokyo Tower with his father's arm . Because of the heat he has dried up, has no more strength and desperately wants to jump from the tower. Suddenly, out of nowhere, dark clouds appear in the sky, bringing rain and in between the shape of a kite appears in the sky. Koichi and his family bring Coo back home. After Coo has received a letter in which someone asks him to come to him, he wants to leave and be sent there in a package. The family is sad, but they have to realize that life for Coo in the city is against his nature. Coo explains that humans rob the earth and water, but he also learned from the Uehara family that not all humans are bad. Koichi brings Coo to Kiyose and sends him from there so that the reporters lurking in front of the house don't notice. The recipient of the package is another mythical creature, a kijimuna, who can transform into the shape of a human. Here in Yambaru on the island of Okinawa , the two can live secluded from the people in peace.

Reviews

“Entertaining anime with a drawing style that takes getting used to and a rather ugly main character who quickly wins sympathy points. The many serious topics are sometimes presented somewhat like a schoolmaster; some of the more violent scenes are clearly integrated into the plot, but make the film seem less suitable for smaller children. "

“The director worked on his animated film for five years, which was made in the best anime tradition at Ghibli Studios . The drawings are rich in detail and true to style based on real models such as buildings, landscapes or interior furnishings. Colors were used skilfully and natural lighting conditions in rain, sunshine or different times of the day were created. The FSK probably only released the film from the age of 12 because of the opening sequence in which Coo's father is killed by a samurai. In its further course, the film could also be suitable and interesting for younger viewers. "

“Ecologically oriented Japanese animated film that focuses on the summer adventures of a boy and his strange mythical Kappa friend. While it quickly becomes clear how difficult life is for such a creature in the modern city, the extent of civilization in particular seems threatening: It is hardly possible to find a hidden corner that has not yet fallen victim to the unstoppable 'development' has fallen. Similar to Hayao Miyazaki's films , Summer Days With Coo takes its young viewers seriously and encourages them to respect animals and nature. "
