action

Normandy , around 1850: The inexperienced and gullible Félicité is courted by Théodore at a festival. He promises the inexperienced woman that he will take her to the sea and marry her. After spending the night together, he leaves her and tells other men in the village that she is easy to get. Desperate, Félicité leaves her job and makes her way through the forest to another village. Here she approaches the widow Mathilde Aubain, who is looking for a new housekeeper. Félicité receives the job and now takes care of the household, the kitchen and Mathilde's children Clémence and the slightly older boy Paul. Above all, the ailing Clémence suffers from the emotional coldness of her mother and clings to Félicité. Mathilde and later also Paul, however, prevent Félicité from becoming motherly.

Félicité travels to the sea with Mathilde and the children during the summer. When the group encounters a bull, Félicité chases the animal away, but breaks his foot in the process. Since Mathilde tells her that she has no major injury because she is forced to walk, the injury is not treated and Félicité retains a limp. Félicité has not forgotten Théodor, whose new job she even finds out. Nevertheless, she develops feelings for a court manager Mathildes, who wants to marry her. After a dispute about the treatment of the children, Félicité is ready to pack her things and go with him, but Mathilde asks her to stay mainly because of Clémence.

The children are getting bigger and Paul is the first to leave the house because he is attending boarding school. Clémence, too, has to leave her parents' home against her will and goes to a convent after communion . Félicité, in turn, happens to meet her sister again, whom she believed dead. Her nephew is Paul's age and now comes to see his aunt every weekend. Félicité flourishes during this time. After the children move out, the careworn Mathilde begins a relationship with her cello teacher Frédéric, but does not want to know anything about a marriage and releases him when he wants to take a new job in Rouen . Years go by and Paul is hired as a seaman on a ship that will take him to America for two years. Félicité is desperate - a few months later she receives the news that Victor shortly after the arrival in Havana of typhoid fever has died. She endures her suffering quietly.

Paul and Clémence have also gotten older. While Paul seems to love his life, Clémence breaks up alive in monastic captivity and dies. Only now does Mathilde recognize her love for her daughter and mourn her for her. Félicité, who was much closer to Clémence throughout his life, is allowed to take over the wake. About Clémence's death, both women come closer and give each other support in their pain. One day Mathilde receives the parrot Lulu from the neighbors, which she passes on to Félicité. Lulu is a great consolation for Félicité and she can give the bird all the love that she was never allowed to muster for people. One day Lulu has disappeared and Félicité is on the verge of despair. When Lulu suddenly reappears and lands on her shoulder, Félicité collapses. When she wakes up, she is numb. While she withdraws completely to Lulu in her quiet world, Mathilde prepares her own end. Lulu freezes to death in winter and Félicité has him stuffed. Mathilde again takes her own life in the spring with laudanum . Shortly afterwards, workers find Félicité struggling with death in her room. A procession of the virgins, in which old Félicité actually wanted to join, passes the window. Félicité cannot hear her singing, but enjoys the scent of the flowers that blow in through the window.
