The Eisengraben is an artificially created flowing body of water in the Potsdam-Mittelmark district and the city of Brandenburg . It drains some wetlands and two lakes into the Havel .

course

The almost six kilometer long ditch begins as a drainage ditch in a wet meadow called Butter Laake south of the village of Brielow , which today belongs to the municipality of Beetzsee and flows in a westerly direction. It has a catchment area of 11.66 square kilometers. Even in Butter Laake, the Eisengraben takes on two other smaller drainage ditches from the right, before it leaves the wet meadow area north of the Butterlake residential area after about 700 meters and merges into the Gördenwald . Here the ditch flows through, among other things, a quarry forest and takes the only drainage of the Bohnenländer See from the right , which it thus drains. About two hundred meters downhill from the confluence of the outflow of the Bohnenländer See, the federal road 102 and another 200 meters away the Brandenburg – Rathenow railway crosses the Eisengraben. Shortly after the border between the cities of Brandenburg and Havelsee , the Eisengraben leaves the Gördenwald again and flows through and drains fields south of the village of Tieckow . About 600 meters before the confluence with the Havel , the Eisengraben takes on another outflow from the Kranepfuhl lake from the left .

In the course of the trench there are three weirs that help regulate the water level and runoff of the wetlands through which it flows, the Bohnenländer See and the Kranepfuhl and, if necessary, are intended to prevent backflow of water during floods in the course of the Havel. The first weir is located directly on the border of the Gördenwald immediately after crossing into the city of Havelsee. The second weir is in the Tieckow colony , through which the Eisengraben flows. Below the confluence of the drainage ditch of the Kranepfuhl lies the third and last weir. Shortly after this weir, state road 962 crosses the ditch.

Animals native to the Eisengraben are, for example, otters , grass snakes , various frog and tailed amphibians , smaller and in the estuary area also larger fish and beavers .

Iron moat and snake moat

In many maps and books the assumption is made that the Eisengraben is the so-called snake ditch in its upper reaches up to the city limits of the Havelsee and forms its extension to the west. According to this assumption, the snake trench, which actually begins about a hundred meters east of the iron trench, also in the Butter Laake, would absorb the water of the Bohnenländer See and flow off east and west. According to these representations, there would be a continuous connection between the Beetzsee and the Havel south of Tieckow via both trenches, but this does not correspond to reality.

Protected areas

In its upper reaches of iron administration in lies the conservation area Westhavelland and Westhavelland Nature Park . The mouth of the trench lies in the landscape protection area of Brandenburg forest and lake area and is also part of the European bird sanctuary of the Middle Havel lowlands.
