The Eleague (proper spelling ELEAGUE ) is a professional league in the e-sports - discipline Counter-Strike: Global Offensive , which celebrated its debut on May 24, 2016th The initiator of the Eleague is the media company Turner , which broadcasts the games on television and on Twitch . Turner's in-house studios in Atlanta will host the tournament.

prehistory

On September 24, 2015 Turner announced the collaboration with the artist agency WME / IMG for a new e-sports project on television. In contrast to the Championship Gaming Series , which took place from 2006 to 2008 , exclusive contracts should not play a role. The name Eleague was officially launched on December 4th, 2015. The concept provides for two seasons per year, each with ten calendar weeks of playing time, in which the group phase and playoffs are played out. A total of 24 teams are initially divided into six groups of four teams each. All group winners qualify for the playoffs, all runners-up and the best two thirds in the group play for two more places for the playoffs in the last-chance qualifier. The prize money for the first season was 1.4 million US dollars set, where the winner will receive 390,000 US dollars. The first participant, OpTic Gaming , was determined on January 7th, 2016 during a meeting with the CSGOLounge works team . All other teams were invited.

Course of the first season

The group stage of the season began on May 24, 2016 and was largely dominated by the teams based in Europe. The European teams Ninjas in Pajamas , Astralis , fnatic , Natus Vincere and Team EnVyUs reached the playoffs as first in the group. From America only Luminosity Gaming had qualified for the playoff entry. However, the lineup of the Brazilians was disqualified after their move to SK Gaming together with Team X , which was previously under contract with SK , because changes within the season contradict the rules of the Eleague. Cloud 9 advanced to the playoffs as the American representative. The last two participants in the playoffs were found with the German team mousesports and the Polish team Virtus.pro via the last chance qualifier and rewarded with an additional 10,000 US dollars in prize money. Both teams caused a stir in the playoffs. Mousesports beat Astralis 16: 2 and 16:12 in the quarter-finals, but failed in the semi-finals against Virtus.pro. In the final on July 30, 2016, the Poles beat the Swedish team fnatic with 16:10 and 16: 8 and won the first season of the Eleague. The team won a total of $ 400,000 in prize money.

Second season

Based on the major tournaments organized by the Valve Corporation , the organizers reduced the field of participants to 16 teams, eight of which were qualified through their playoff entry in the first season. Four teams each from America and Europe, which had to qualify, complete the field of participants. The group stage is played in double elimination mode, with the first two teams in each group reaching the play-offs carried out according to the knockout system . The tournament started on October 21, 2016 and ended on December 3, 2016.

Course of the second season

Among the eight teams that reached the playoffs were the five European teams mousesports , Virtus.pro , Ninjas in Pajamas , Astralis and FaZe Clan and the three American teams Cloud 9 , SK Gaming and OpTic Gaming . The playoff representative mousesports, who played with two German players, failed in the quarter-finals due to OpTic Gaming, who made it into the final by beating FaZe Clan in the subsequent semi-final. There the quintet awaited the Danish team Astralis, which had previously defeated the co-favorites SK Gaming and Ninjas in pajamas. In the final, OpTic submitted the first map de_train. However, they were able to work their way back to de_cobblestone and de_overpass with 16: 6 and 16:11 wins and thus secured first place including the prize money of 400,000 US dollars.

Television broadcast

In addition to the game streaming portal Twitch , the tournament can also be seen on the US television channel TBS . On German television in June and July 2016 every week at midnight, a summary of the events of the previous week produced by Freaks 4U Gaming GmbH was shown on ProSieben Maxx . The program broadcast under the name ELEAGUE - Counter Strike: Global Offensive achieved a market share of up to 2.8% in the advertising-relevant target group. After the attack in Munich in 2016 , the station stopped production.

Other Events

In cooperation with Blizzard Entertainment and FACEIT , the Eleague was one of the organizers of the Overwatch Open , which is endowed with US $ 300,000, and broadcast the final on September 30, 2016 on US television. The winner of the tournament was the Misfits team consisting of three French and three Swedish players. In May 2017, Victor "Punk" Woodley won a Street Fighter V tournament in the Eleague.

The Eleague hosted the tenth major tournament in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive from January 22nd to 29th, 2017 in Atlanta and was commissioned to hold the twelfth major in Boston . With the Eleague CS: GO Premier 2017 , the Eleague in CS: GO organized another million dollar tournament away from the majors, which was won by the FaZe Clan .
