Elio Boncompagni

Elio Boncompagni (born May 8, 1933 in Caprese Michelangelo ; † November 9, 2019 in Florence ) was an Italian orchestra leader and conductor and general music director in Aachen .

Live and act

After studying at the Conservatorio Luigi Cherubini in Florence specialist violin and composition Boncompagni moved to Rome for the Conservatorio Santa Cecilia in order for Franco Ferrara to attend conducting courses. During this time he won prizes at international conducting competitions organized by the RAI in Milan and Radio Hilversum . He then accompanied Tullio Serafin as a student and assistant during his performances with international orchestras.

This was followed by jobs at renowned theaters and theaters in Europe. He initially led the orchestra at the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels for four years , followed by a two-year period as chief conductor at the Royal Dramatic Theater in Stockholm . He then took over the artistic direction and conducting at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples for three years and then the position of permanent conductor at the Vienna State Opera for five years . In between he was repeatedly invited as a guest conductor to appearances with orchestras such as the Vienna Symphony Orchestra , the London Symphony Orchestra , the Opéra National de Paris , the Deutsche Oper Berlin and the German State Opera Berlin or the Bavarian State Opera in Munich .

In 1996 Boncompagni moved to the Stadttheater Aachen , where he led the Aachen Symphony Orchestra and the Aachen Symphony Choir, initially for one year as a temporary director and then as a permanent director until 2002 . During this time he distinguished himself in particular with the staged premiere of the old Viennese version of Donizetti's operas "Don Sebastiano" and with Maria di Rohan , also as a reconstruction of a Viennese version, for which he won a prize from the German press for the best program of the symphonic season in Germany.

After his time in Aachen, Boncompagni moved back to Italy, where he also worked as a private lecturer at the conservatories in Perugia and Pesaro , but continued to do numerous arrangements with major opera houses such as the Teatro Verdi in Trieste and the Teatro dell'Opera in Rome or the Teatro del Maggio in Florence as well as other guest conductors abroad.

During his entire career, Boncompagni distinguished himself particularly through his profound knowledge of the Italian repertoire, and especially through his interpretation of the works of Gaetano Donizetti, and repeatedly used this experience as a main theme in his performances. In recent years he has also made remarkable CD and record recordings of Donizetti's operas Anna Bolena , Maria Stuarda , Maria di Rohan with various orchestras and a Donizetti portrait of arias and overtures with the soprano Edita Gruberová .
