Elisabeth Hilda Zita Marie Anna Antoinette Friederike Wilhelmine Louise of Luxembourg (* December 22, 1922 at Berg Castle ; † November 22, 2011 in Fischbach ) was Princess of Luxembourg, Nassau and Bourbon-Parma. As the second child of the Grand Duchess Charlotte of Luxembourg (1896–1985) and her husband Prince Felix of Bourbon-Parma (1893–1970), a brother of Empress Zita of Austria , she was conditionally number two in the line of succession for a long time after her brother Jean in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg .

Before the imminent German invasion on May 10, 1940, the grand ducal family fled via southern France to Spain and Portugal, from where on July 15 they boarded the cruiser USS Trenton , which had been made available by US President Franklin D. Roosevelt . fled to America . In order to respect the neutrality of the United States of America , she moved on to Montreal , Canada . Grand Duchess Charlotte herself went into exile in London with members of the government . Prince Felix, her eldest son Prince Jean and Princess Elisabeth followed her to London in 1942. After her father and brother had been back in Luxembourg since September 1944, she returned with the rest of the family after the liberation in April 1945.

On December 22, 1955, Princess Elisabeth of Luxembourg married Franz Ferdinand von Hohenberg , who was born on September 13, 1927 in Artstetten Castle . He was the eldest son of Duke Maximilian von Hohenberg (1902–1962) and Elisabeth von Walburg zu Wolfegg and Waldsee (1904–1993) and the grandchild of the heir to the throne Franz Ferdinand and the Duchess of Hohenberg , both of whom were murdered in Sarajevo in 1914. The wedding took place on May 9, 1956 in the Mariendom . The couple then lived at Artstetten Castle in Lower Austria. Hohenberg died on August 15, 1977 and was buried in the crypt of Artstetten Castle.

Offspring and later life

Her two daughters, Princess Anita von Hohenberg (* 1958), who married the French Count Romée de La Poeze d'Harambure in 1978 , and Princess Sophie von Hohenberg (* 1960), who married the Belgian Baron Jean Louis de Potesta in 1983, were at Berg Castle born in Luxembourg .

After the death of her husband, Princess Elisabeth of Luxembourg became the sole heir of Artstetten Castle and in 1983 gave this property to her eldest daughter, Countess Romée de La Poëze d'Harambure . After the death of the Grand Duchess of Luxembourg in 1985, Princess Elisabeth resided in Fischbach in Luxembourg . From 1980 to 1990 she continuously participated in official events. She was regarded as the “memory” of the family and finally resided with her brother, the Grand Duke Jean, at the grand ducal castle Fischbach in the canton of Mersch . She died on November 22, 2011 and was buried on December 3 in the crypt of Artstetten Castle in Lower Austria .
