Ellen Drew

Ellen Drew, actually Esther Loretta Ray (born November 23, 1915 in Kansas City , Missouri , † December 3, 2003 in Palm Desert , California ), was an American actress .

Ellen Drew worked in a variety of jobs and won several beauty pageants before becoming an actress. She went to Hollywood and initially worked as an ice cream seller. There she was discovered by actor William Demarest . After a few minor roles, she received a studio contract with Paramount Pictures in 1938 . Here she played a variety of female lead roles, for example at the side of Dick Powell in the comedy Christmas in July by Preston Sturges or in Stuart Heisler's B-horror film The Monster and the Girl (1941).

In 1944 Drew switched to RKO . In the following years she appeared in many westerns and some film noirs . Her film partners included well-known actors such as Glenn Ford , Joel McCrea , Vincent Price , John Payne and Randolph Scott . After her contract with RKO expired in 1951, she turned to television work and guest roles in a few series, but overall her success waned. In the cinema she was only seen once, in a supporting role in the Western Outlaw's Son (1957). Her last television work appeared in an episode of the Barbara Stanwyck Show in 1961 .

Drew was married four times to, among others, the screenwriter Sy Bartlett .
